Having successfully got the valves, crank, pistons, cam and lifters out, in this episode I turn my attention to the studs. I show a method that seemed to work well on this motor. This may not work for all motors. Your results may vary. Will vary more likely.

You did good on that job...i usually end up with around 3 broken studs...:o

Thanks Mart, I'm going the use the hammer to get the rest of mine out, just have to wait until spring as my block is in a portable garage and its 30 degrees and snowing at the moment. I also am going to try and weld a nut onto the three broken studs to get them out.

Bob, I didn't soak mine, but I would advise you to go out and apply penetrating oil of your choice every few days until you are ready to do it don't forget the studs are open to the water jacket so you can slosh some in there too and try and wet the studs from the other side.

I have had further stud removal experience which did end up with some breakages. I also used heat.

Re the welding on of the nut. Drill right through the stud remnant first. That worked for me once.

I might do a further video showing it not going so well. Might, mind, no promises.

Mart, since I knew I wasn't going to get to the rest of the studs until Spring I sprayed the block with Fluid Film, I am impressed with this product it stays where you put it and keeps rust away. I've learned not to use it on my modern tailgate latch, it got so thick in the wintertime I was unable to keep the tailgate closed(would not latch), I had to wash it out with brake cleaner and just used a plain silicone spray.

Those videos are the “go to” ones for anyone starting to disassemble their first stuck flathead. Now if I could just find a young apprentice to teach on the ten or so that I have. :)
