1940 Radio Installation
 

I am installing a stock Zenith radio in my 40 wagon. It has updated AM/FM internals. I can't find the holes for the hooks under the dash flange. Is this something you have to drill on the dash flange yourself? The ones on the radio are clear but I can't see where the other ends go.

On my '40 Fordor the holes are near the choke and the throttle.

I have some holes in those areas going straight up and down under the choke and throttle but they are not going at the right angle to catch the rods. I think I am looking at the wrong holes. It sure would be nice if somebody had a picture. My radio is a Zenith cabinet. Thanks!

On both my 40s, those holes go straight up. The hooks are bent greater then 90. Look straight back toward the dash from the holes in the radio brackets and you will see the holes.

So do the hooks go through the radio brackets or the holes in the dash?

Hooks go through holes in the dash, wing nuts on back side of radio bracket. The hook should be smaller in diameter then the hole enough to go in there and line up with the radio.

Seems like the hooks I have would be pulling in the wrong direction. If you use the holes on the lower flange of the dash, they will pull the radio rearward. I can't see how that would hold the radio in place. I would think they have to go upward somehow. Also the mounting holes in the Zenith radio go up and down and not at the right angle to catch holes in the lower flange of the dash. Something is definitely wrong somewhere.

The J hooks go up through the holes in the bottom flange of the dash. The threaded ends goes through the ears on the radio. The wing nuts draw the the radio snug.

Thanks for the picture. Mine looks totally different though. I have the Zenith radio and the hook points are at the rear of the radio and face downward.

Mine's a Zenith, too. Are you sure you have a 1940 radio? Here's an illustration from the 1940 Ford Radio Owner's Manual.

The main mount for the radio is the nut at the top of the dash, those hooks pull the rubber that goes around the speaker up tight against the inside of the dash. I have both Philco and Zenith radios and they both mount exactly the same.

As deuce roadster says, a special nut attaches the top of the radio to the dash and also serves as the antenna connection.

I am not going to run a speaker on the radio. This post reminds me that I need to put a piece of rubber to the area between the radio and the dash speaker grille. How thick do you think I need to go on the rubber to make up for not having a speaker and to eliminate rattles? I am going to run remote speakers under the front seat. Thanks!

Drake sells the proper rubber for that. I think they are back in stock. Part # 01A-18820.

You can mount the radio without the speaker boot, and it won't rattle.
