Installing glove box and door in 1940 Ford coup
 

I am probably going to ask some questions that see too simple but I am a new
Owner of. 1940 Ford Delux Business Coup.
I have obtained a glove box for it with install clips. I have the glove box door
(Needing a clock) Is there a drawing or instruction anywhere on properly installing the glove box and door.
I also need horns and a radio antenna.
Car has been converted to a 12 volt system with alternator.
Has flat head V8. Can't get trunk open no key but have blanks so looking for old time locksmith.
I suspect may be several quarts of Moonshine in trunk. This is a barn find but had been80% restored then hidden in the barn from relatives.
Dual exhaust and runs like. Flathead should.

not sure what redmodelt is talking about, but a '40 works for this forum...welcome to the 'Barn....got pics??have a feeling you'll be able to get your questions answered...you can search the forum and look for locksmith, etc....good luck with your car and keep having fun....Mike

Dick: I will send you a PM with contact info for a lock smith. For an original car the glove box and the trunk are keyed alike. If you have a key for the glove box try in in the trunk. If you do not have a key for the glove box lock remove the entire lock assembly before putting in the glove box and it should have a key code stamped into the lock. You could reinstall the glove box lock and ask the lock smith to cut a key to the code and then try in in the trunk and the glove box.

In reference to the locked trunk:
The glove box and trunk lock are usually "keyed" alike. Remove the glove box lock assembly from the dash; check for the key code stamped on the body of the lock assembly (probably the FY xxx series). If it is there, forward a PM with the code and I can cut a "key-to-code" for $10.00 including postage.

redmodelt, you need to rethink your post. This question regarding the '40 glovebox is in the correct forum. I'm sure Ryan will also let you know it's correctly posted.

I believe what redmodelt was saying is that this was originally posted in the "Questions and Suggestions to Editor" forum, not the Early V-8 forum. He replied to the OP in that forum, saying it should be moved to this forum, and he sent a message to Ryan.

Ryan then moved both the original post and Red's reply to this forum. However, once it was in this forum, Red's reply could seem confusing. Red edited his reply to reflect that this thread had been moved from a different forum, but not everyone picked up on that. (of course the other problem is that since the OP originally posted in the wrong forum, he may never actually find his way here to see the answers)

The clips punch into the cardboard and give the screws something to bite into instead of cardboard. There should be little marks showing where to place them. I use a block of wood and a small hammer to install them. If there are no locating marks, put the box in the dash and mark where the screws should go and proceed from there.

To keep this on topic, I have a '40 with a glove box door. It was purchased in 1968 for me (I was 18 at the time) by my Dad in Hartwell. Born and raised in Hartwell but moved away for jobs. My wife and I both have family still there. We were supposed to be eating bbq at Backstreet BBQ tonight but my wife got sick yesterday and had to cancel the trip. Hartwell used to have a Memorial Day weekend cruise in, I don't know if they still have it. Good luck with the '40.

OK.........said he wanted to get into the trunk --- you should be able to get into the truck through the passenger compartment, by removing the paneling.
Once there, you should be able to remove the lock mechanism, and get the trunk open.
If you can't get past the moonshine -- stop. Taste test. Repeat. You may forget why you were there in the first place.

One more thought. If there is not already a hole in the roof for the antennae, consider one of the newer "hidden" antennae. Don't be tempted to mount it on the cowl as that is incorrect.

Thanks to everyone. We picked the lock and I was able to get in trunk. Beautifully restored but no Moonshine. No spare either so will work on that.
Did see the marks and installed glove box worke perfect.
Thank you.
Still need want a clock.
Trunk opens fine but mechanism loose work on my 1950 Navion Airplane so should be able to figure this out.
I love this 40 Ford.

Bob Drake and others might sell repro. clocks. The hard part to find is the sheet metal surround bracket that holds it to the back of the glove box door. I did see some 1940 clocks on the internet for sale at over $300. Very pricey.

All of the hidden antennas I have found required 12 volts. Have you found a source for a 6 volt model?
