counter weights on the crankshaft
 

I called a machine shop that works on vintage engines to ask about putting counter weights oh my engine. He told me to go and buy a new counterbalanced crank to the toon of $1100 or so. I want to just get the bolt on weights and be happy but where do you get them and how accurate do they have to be mounted? Jack

Do a search, if you cant find anything let me know,I have a pile of stuff stored somewhere.

They are both welded and bolted on usually. Installed by someone who knows what they are doing. They need to be extremely accurately mounted and then the crank balanced by a specialist. Not all machine shops have such balancing equipment.
You'll prolly end up paying the same amount. This is not a backyard deal


We already have a poster here with a brand new engine which was supposedly had the weights added to his crank, but there is a lot of vibration, so it is an easy guess that it was not done properly


Surely no one would try dropping the pan and bolting on the weights

Where are you located? There’s a guy near me that does it. Last one I had done was $450. I’m not sure if he’s still doing them or if he has any done as spec.

There could be many reasons for vibration, including poorly ground crank, unbalanced fly wheel and pressure plate.ect. Who knows , maybe an unbalanced piston. To blame the weights is kind of jumping to conclusions.

The bolt on counterbalances I have heard about were for the model T.

I'd only use the ones that are shrunk on.
Even if they are not spot on when fitted, a lot can be done with a drill and a welder when balancing.

This is how they do it at Bert's Model A Center in Denver for the balanced engines they build. No idea of cost or if they sell the cranks separately.

The ones from Berts look so good that I might ship them mine when I am ready. I appreciate all of your comments and realize that this is not a shade tree mechanic job. Thanks again. Jack

In the past we have had the weights welded on, the person we used knew how to do it correctly. If done wrong, like body panel welding, you can warp the crank.

These are the ones we started making in 1961, just don't have time any more.

James, I'm confused.... When I go to your website, it infers that you don't offer counter weights added to a crankshaft. It says, and I quote " why run a welded up, counterbalanced, 80 year old crank that is ground 10/20/30 or even 40 thousands undersized that cost up to $650 when for $1025 you can have a brand new crank"....... So do you offer the service, or just sell a new crank.... Just curious
