We had one of the most rusted stubborn transmissions ever to grace our shop. This toploader was so dry and stuck that nothing would move or rotate. Many blows with a punch and the BFH would not budge the 7111 countershaft from the case. The customer agreed to scrap it and we're building one from our parts stock.

Today, my helper Will Kimble, asked if we might try moving the shaft by using our 20 ton press. We set it up and cranked the press handle. The press groaned and grunted and finally the shaft moved inward. That shaft moved allright….check out the results. Just confirmed to me that we made the right call to scrap it !

Little superglue or epoxy should fix it right up! :)

I have used candle wax to separate severely rusted parts. It is magic.

I bet that shaft didn't weep any lube. Rust seals up any loose fitting hole.

I've had redi strip do some amazing things to rusty stuff, at least it was to me. But the time I took parts in turn around was months and I wasn't in a hurry then. Would there have been anything salvageable inside that case?

Well I highly doubt it. Every gear and shaft was severely rusted and pitted. Nothing would move. We’d sprayed it thoroughly with PB Blaster but nothing budged after several days. We still thought we’d at least perhaps save the case. This was where we hit the roadblock of that stuck countershaft. I had to weigh the extra hours of work trying to clear the gearbox versus simply pulling a good set of gears and a decent case from our stock. Of the hundreds of rusted gearboxes we’ve encountered, this was the first one to successfully defy us.

If I had a transmission like this, I would have dumped it into a bucket of "Rust-911" solution and let it sit a couple of days. You might be surprised with the results.

(I much prefer "Evaporust", but the economics are just not there in this situation.)

Or a tub of used oil for a yr. I've had decent luck with the new pb blaster stuff, as getting kroll isn't easy for me. This one would take a lotttt of soaking.



Even if you free it maybe too pitted due to neglect?

I've freed worse. Took many months of soaking in oil, and a few heat cycles. But they can be freed eventually.

My favourite spanner was found on a beach encrusted in rust with sand & shells sticking out of the rust blobs.

Guess the lesson is to when storing don't keep it out side or fill it with oil and spray the sh!t out of it ever season. Maybe inside also.
