Been communicating on this HAMB Ford for a few months and then there was a price drop, So it's now in my garage. An original body unrestored '40 dlx cpe. suffering a bit from yrs of storage in Blaine, Tennessee, by way of Detroit area. I an a sucker for unrestored Fords. It has a '39 trans and a X brand 283 tho. Here goes. Newc

Newc, very nice, old time street rod. The 283 with the breather tube on the manifold and generator is very cool. I'm sure you will get grief from the flathead boy's, but I would take that car in a minute.

I've always heard that that powertrain was a factory option. Seriously, it looks like a verrrry nice car. If it was mine and ran and drove good, I wouldn't change a thing.

I’ve seen that on the HAMB as well....if I remember correctly the price seemed reasonable a few months ago when I was looking at it....I have enough vehicles and projects now though....the 283 wouldn’t have bothered me a bit!!!.....Congrats to you!!.....Mark

I think the only thing I'd change is I would stop calling it "original".. far from it.

Great buy! You might be more welcome on HAMB than FordBarn though. Keep us posted on your progress.

Nice car you could always put a warmed over flathead back in it.

Dang, I gotta read the HAMB more! Very nice old hot rod. That 283/39 trans swap was pretty common "back in the day." I agree I wouldn't change a thing...well, maybe some flames on the hood. :D

Very nice! Funny how the Chevy V8 seems like a drop-in in these old Fords!! Was THE thing to do in the later 50s and 60s.

You are of course quite correct. I've had a few through the years and they appeared to be factory installed.
I had a '48 convertible with a '49 Olds Rocket 88 that also appeared to be factory installed.
All were bolted up to the stock transmissions and all were frightening to drive. Especially the Olds fitted '48. Way too much power for that stock chassis.

At this point in time it wouldn't surprise me if there were more 40 Fords with sbc engines then flatheads.

Think that might be a safe bet.

Love it!!! Thanks for sharing. Only thing better than an old Ford, is an old Ford hot rod!

My '38 had that combination when I bought it. Ran fine and cool. I built an L100 276" 8BA to replace it. The 283 now sits in the corner with all the mounts, adapter, etc if it ever gets re-installed. Here is the 283 coming out and the 276" installed. Some days I long for the smooth drivability again.

Yep; It is the 'Shine' car. even have the 'Mug shot' of the owner when busted. Fellow named 'Luther'. The body is 'original' anyway, never been apart. thanks fellows. Drove it 75 miles today. Newc

Man, what a "sleeper"! This guy, and this car are as welcome as can be on MY FordBarn! I THINK that Kube likely leaned over to his left and barfed-up dinner when he saw that third picture! I LOVE this thing!! DD

I find this sentence quite interesting. I would expect a well-built 276" flathead would be just about equal to a stock 283. It sounds like you experienced a not insignificant difference between the two. I, for one, would appreciate it if you would elaborate on it.
