Water pump removal help

Hi folks.

I’m trying to get the water pumps out of my 51 custom fordor 8BA. Managed to get all four bolts out for both, surprisingly. Problem is the crankcase vent tube on the drivers side. It’s blocking the top inner bolt so i cant remove it. Any tricks to this? I loosened a nearby clamp on the vent tube, but the tube doesnt want to move. Read thru a few threads on water pump removal, but didnt see anyone saying the vent tube needs to come out. Appreciate any pointers. Thanks. Emmit

Re: Water pump removal help

you will need to remove the vent tube, it is just sort of "pressed" into the manifold and if you remove the clamp bolt and wiggle it around it will pull out

The road draft tube is a 2 piece unit. If the lower section is still there is has a bolt down as well that might be hanging this up.

Well, after a bit of a wrestle, i did manage to get the tube out.

Now, another problem. I thought i had broken free all the bolts, but when trying to take out the pass water pump, i realized the one in the hose connection wasnt really moving. A photo showed it is corroded to the point where my socket just spins on it. I tried different sockets metric and SAE but nothing doing.

So, i understand the best way to handle this is to weld a nut onto the bolt - but i dont have a welder. Anybody got any ideas?? Car is in Santa Barbara area (Ca) in case someone is close by with a welder and can help. I’ll make it worth your while

Thanks

There is an extractor socket that cuts into the head.

Not sure you can get in there to weld a nut onto the bolt and the prior owner may have used a stainless bolt. That said if all else fails you may have to destroy the pump to get to the bolt. Hopefully not.

The socket extractor tool should do the trick. Tap it tightly onto the old bolt head before attempting to turn it. Those things work a wonder. Looks like your old bolt still has plenty of meat left on it for this process.

Sometimes that bolt is stubborn, I tap the pump (all other bolts removed) with a lead
hammer counter clockwise to loosen it up. The bolt usually freezes up to the pump
not the block. works for me

Thanks for the tips. I’m getting an extractor set and will give it a shot.

Or, you could center punch the bolt- and use a 3/16" drill to pilot a hole. Then drill the head of the bolt off with a 3/8" bit. After removing the pump there is enough of the bolt left above the surface of the block to use vise grips to remove the rest of the bolt.
