I just edited up a new video. It's a vintage Buma boring machine, running for the first time in heaven knows how long.

I've been working on this over the last few weeks, just trying to get it back into serviceable condition. The lower bearing was quite bad so I bought some new bearings and got those fitted. I bought a left hand lathe tool and modified it to fit. I used my Elliott milling machine which is always a pleasure.

Apologies for the lighting, I have inserted some still shots to try and show what I was waffling on about. So why not spend 5 mins quality time with me in the garage?

Mart, Excellent. Well done. It's so neat to have those old machines still doing their job.
Glad you saved it and brought it back to life. be sure to take a video of it "in action" on a block if you get the chance. Just think, that was once state of the art.

Hey Mart - cool old machine! Isn't it cool the first time you get something like this running - just sort of takes you back in time . . . when things were manual, simple and just did the job they were designed for. No sensors, no electronics . . . just simple mechanical devices.

You have the hold down accessories for it to anchor it in the next cylinder?
I might have a spare set if you need.
Now you have to find a boringplate so you can bore without pulling the studs.

Hi Mart, thanks for the video, but that's a relatively "new" boring bar, it runs on electricity??

We have an "old" one here, and we can even bore Flathead blocks without electricity? Wouldn't want to or even need to today, but we could do it!

(Add) This bar can be used with the engine still "under-the-hood"!

It looks similar to my boring bar made by Storm Manufacturing in Minneapolis Minnesota. The drive end is chain driven instead of gear driven like yours seems to be. The centering device looks to be similar. The fly cutter looks similar also. I've bored several engines with it. No idea what vintage; it's also old. It is nice to see the old tools still doing the jobs they were designed for! Congratulations for bringing one back to life.

Some of the old motors was wired with a starter winding that was actuated by a set of centrifugal weights...that´s the way my old storm works.
When the points was dirty or worn it acted like this.

Thanks for the replies, fellas.

The motor does not have a capacitor, I will try and get access to the centrifugal switch. I think it uses a starter winding. I'm no expert on electric motors, but have found some info online.

Murre, I do not have any hold down parts. I think the cost of shipping from Sweden may be prohibitive. I was going to make up a clamping system as the next part of the project. From what I have seen of the Buma parts (photos only) there is not anything fancy or trick about them, just a central threaded stud with a cross piece that holds across the bottom of the adjacent bore, with a plate and nut at the top. Thanks for asking though.

The motor investigation will make another little video subject, as will the clamping parts, I guess.

It will propbably be $50 shipping or something like that....
If the points or centrifugal part is beyond help there´s a trick with some solidstate parts that can replace it...

Very cool machine! I would love to see it working a block. Having no knowledge of the boring operation I cannot readily understand the fixtures needed to accurately bore an engine block. Thanks for posting the video.
