Scraping noise when turning
 

I just purchased a 41 pickup and have only driven the truck around the neighborhood. I've noticed when turning right the front right hub makes a scraping noise. This is a metal on metal scraping noise. I can here a scraping noise when turning left on the left side too, but its not as loud as when turning right. The owner claims he put "Lincoln drum brakes" on the front and the front is dropped 2". I've had this problem on other cars with front drum brakes but it wasn't as loud and I never did figure out where the noise came from. Any ideas what the source may be and how to fix it?

If wheel bearings are loose, could be drum against backing plate. Dangerous.

Real Lincoln drums set the wheels closer together ( narrow the track width)

Does it have tube shock conversion on the front? I had this happen were the edge of the rim rubbed the shock stud on a tight turn

Same thing happened when I installed the MT Products Lincoln brakes that are 2 in wide,not the stock 1 3/4 Ford size. I made sheet metal spacers. If you had a lathe large enough you could trim the edge of the drum lip. Could also trim the edge of the backing plate but, that's a lot more difficult to do.

I had this problem with an MG once. I had just finished doing a valve job on it and on left turns it would make a scraping sound and wouldn't turn to full lock. When I took a look, I found a large screwdriver wedged in the left front suspension members.:o

And so, quik, your Ford flathead adventure begins. You mentioned you did a test drive before you bought the truck. Do you recall it happening then? Any conversation with the seller about the this, other than the Lincoln brakes? If you jack the front and turn the wheels to the right, does it still scrape with the weight off the wheels?

Guessing you'll find it and fix it shortly.

These are some great ideas. Ill pull the front wheel and check the wheel bearings. One question, what is the torque requirement on the wheel bearing nut?

The drum spacer looks like a viable answer. Thanks for the template.

RKS, yeah I heard the scraping when on the test drive. It didn't sound like anything I couldn't fix. Worst case, a set of disc brakes will fix it. However, I would like to keep the Lincoln drums on it.

I take it you have standard wheels on? Mine does similar after I swapped to radials using F150 rims [6" wide] just touches the lower shock mount RHS .:rolleyes:

Torque is typical taper roller setup. Just snug. Someone will post the proper procedure, but they shouldn't be "torqued" as such. I think you can apply a torque to seat new bearings, but after a couple of spins you slacken it off and just bring it snug. Just on the loose side of snug is the right setting. If too tight it will overheat and can lock up.

Can you fit your head under there and look around? See if you can find scraped paint on a suspension part, or the backside of the wheel.

I have the same problem w/my '37 coupe , after installing later F100 Bendix type front brakes . I took the drums off , & could see where the drums had been scrapping on the top of the backing plates . 19Fordy has the answer , and that is my next little future project/fix .
