Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford Does anyone know of a vendor whom sells the original style bolts that hold backing plate to rear end. It’s a female style nut/bolt thing.

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford You may want to try Ray Helgers in RI 401 635 4849, or Fred Wilner at So Side Obsolete in Faribault MN 320 328 2756

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford what you have pictured is a tube nut used with an aftermarket tube shock installation kit. not original style. originally the 39 ford had a lever arm shock that bolted to the frame and the arm attached with a ball stud to the rear end. the backing plate had castle nuts with a hole in the stud for a cotter pin. you can try McMaster/karr hardware catalog, they may have such a nut.

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford My guess you are talking about the 4 bolts in back of trans. They hold the trans and rearend together. Special bolts would be found at trans builder

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford 1 Attachment(s)
Rusty: The bolts you show look like after market tube shock bolts used on backing plate.
You can see the sleeve and bolt here. Car is 40 Ford. |
Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford From the information posted by the O/P, I agree with "alanwoodieman".

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford The bolt is the original long bolt that is used in the lower two holes and normally go through the radius arm. The nut is a special, used with a tube shock conversion. The bolt will take a standard castellated nut if the shock conversion is not required.

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford Both the long bolt and special nut are specifically for the aftermarket lower shock brackets the bolt to rear end through the backing plates, wishbone and axle itself. Please let us know if you find some as they are pretty scarce. Mike Driskell may have some at 3rd gen automotive 35fordtn here on Fordbarn

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford Thanks for the info. You guys are spot on as always. The 1937 I just bought has had the brakes converted to 1939 hydraulics. It also has one of the tube shock conversion kits on it. It is missing one of these female type nuts. I will make some phone calls to try and locate one. I do have a machinist friend who says he can make me a few. Might have to go this route.

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford I remember modifying a mag wheel type lug nut to do the same job.

Re: Bolts that hold backing plate 39 ford What thread size is it ? I've used 3/8 fine poly lock nuts for small block Chevys and 7/16 poly locks from big block Chevy valve train . For similar fixes , though not this application.
They're about 1" long . |
