Muffler Selection
 

Hello folks. I found some vintage Rams Horns for my 292. While I think the crossover pipe is kind of cool and vintage, I would like dual exhaust out the back. So, with that in mind, has anyone tried 40 series Flowmasters on their 292 and can you provide any advice? I want a good rumble and won't be doing a lot of long distance road trips, so I am not too concerned with the interior noise level (within reason). I just don't want it annoyingly loud. The 40 series seem to fit that pretty well from the research I have done so far. Thanks, Glenn

I’ve got a pair of Flowmaster on an OT 383. 10 years old, so probably the original series. They’re great. I put Hushpower mufflers on my ‘bird, and they were way too loud at WOT. I added resonators as it was cheaper than redoing the whole works. Wouldn’t do that again.

I put dual Thrush flow-thru design glasspacks on my '55 with 292 back in the '80's and they sound great but I don't think they sell them anymore. Nowadays most of the repro parts suppliers are selling Smithy's mufflers. I put one on my '55 Courier with 223 I-block 6-cyl and I hate it. It sounds lousy.

I run Dynomax 20" oval turbos on my car. At first they were quiet, after maybe 6 months the sound has changed. For the better, a pretty nice muffler for around $65.

Thanks guys, one of those things that is hard to choose sometimes. This is my first 292, so a little different for me. Have only dealt with 260s, 289s, 302s and 351s in the past. I know the 292 is a whole different animal (to some degree).

I had dual Porters put on my '56 about 10 years ago. Love the sound. Nice rumble at idle but they will bark a bit when accelerating. Inside the car it's just enough to hear 'em, not annoying at all.

Thanks Ron, that is what I am looking for, nice rumble but not annoying inside. I know my interior insulation will have a lot to do with that.

JMO but only thing back in the day that I knew of was glasspacks or stock. Loved the full throttle crackle of a glasspack. Think it had a lot to do with the small pipes back then. Whether you had turn downs or not also.

Can't go wrong w/Cherry Bomb glasspacks on a 292 Y-Block !

Thought the Cherry Bomb glasspacks were discontinued but I see Summit Racing carries em :)

My experience with the Flowmaster 40 and even 50 series is that they bring much noise in the vehicle and drone is a problem.

A 22" case length will make a more mellow glass pack sound I went that route with my 302's Cherry Bombs. You could try this link and crank up your speakers. https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...rd+glass+packs

flow master super 44s, make a nice rumble, the regular 40 series has a hollow tin like sound.

40 drone to the extreme, glasspacks are so much better inside and I think sound better outside also.
