160 B front door window trim I have an early March 31 S/W and the Front door window garnish has 3 screws on the front inside edge and 2 screws on the glass side. I am helping a friend with a late 31 S/W 160 B and his front window trim has 2 screws on the inside edge and 2 screws on the glass side. Could the difference be early flat firewall vs. late indented firewall? Or is it Briggs vs. Murray? Has anyone ever noticed this before?

Here are some photos of a spare inside window frame for a 1931 S/W. I have a 1931 160B Briggs flat fire wall and the window frames on it are the same as this spare.
Engine #A4383607 mfr 2-24-1931 Assembled Feb ~ May 1931 Seattle Assembly Plant - # AS 378 I hope this helps you. |
Re: 160 B front door window trim Thanks B, your frames match my early Briggs frames. Anyone able to post a picture of a late 160B frame?
Where did you find the assembly plant I.D. on your car? |

Look at the photo below, the assembly plant stamping is between the two domed bolt heads.

Re: 160 B front door window trim I have a June 160A and it has three screws. I have never seen one with only two screws on the found side of that molding

Re: 160 B front door window trim My late (August 31) slant T/S is like the one shown in 160-B's photo.

Re: 160 B front door window trim Dose anyone have a Town Sedan built by Murray? I am thinking that the doors were switched out from this Briggs at one time.

Ed,
Here is the information that I have put together on the 1931 S/W. If any of the members of this forum have additional information, or if my information is incorrect please post. FWIW When Ford built the 31 Slant Window he had Murray and Briggs build the bodies the same so parts were interchangeable. There are some telltale differences such as Briggs used d-nuts on the fire wall and Murray used caged nuts on the firewall. Also Brigg had a manufactures mark the Briggs “Bug”, see the attached photo showing the “Bug’ on the RF cowl .on some production parts, on the front cowl. The 160A. The Ford Standard Fordor had scrolled door and window handles, painted molding around the windows and painted front dash; the dome light was centered in the car with a switch on the light and a rubber mat in the driver's compartment. The 160B. The Ford town Sedan had a pull rope on the back of the front seat, simple non scrolled door and window handles, wood grained molding (with a scalloped lower frame ) wood grained front dash, the dome light was over the back window and was controlled by a sliding switch on the door post, cowl lights and carpet. The 160C. The Ford deluxe town Sedan - Same as the 160B but no rear quarter window, referred to as a blind back. |
Re: 160 B front door window trim I had a very early 160 B (non indent firewall)and now a late 160 B with indent, Murray built with Murray name on seat bottom wood. Garnish moldings were the same for both models but no rear door pockets on the former but with a front back seat pocket.
See the De Angeles, Henry, Francis Ford Model A book for info. |
Re: 160 B front door window trim Some further investigation reveals that my friends car is not a thoroughbred Briggs. The cowl was replaced with a Murray cowl and maybe Murray doors. The cowl has caged nuts across the bottom of the windshield. Dose anyone know how to tell a Murray door?

Here's mine, late'31 160-B, Murray body
The window frames on Murray's are curved, Ford/Briggs are squared |
Re: 160 B front door window trim Quote:
The 1931 Slant Window bodies made by Murray, Briggs and Ford all had curved window frames. see post #9 and the below link to the MAFCA web site article by Rick Black http://www.mafca.com/rt_briggs_or_murray.html |

Re: 160 B front door window trim My 160B has 3+2 screws. It is from May 1931, and I have never been able to determine who made the body.

Re: 160 B front door window trim Well more investigation and thanks to Vince Faller, I think the problem is solved. I believe my friend is missing the glass run retainer. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/murraybriggs.htm
I need to get over there and check, this is a project started 10 years ago and these parts are missing. The story continues .......thanks to all for the help. |
Re: 160 B front door window trim My friend found the parts and all is well. Thanks to everyone for the help.
