Painting transmission.

I'm almost done reassembly of the engine for my '35 1 1/2T, painted the "small parts" today but am still undecided what to do with the transmission. I'm thinking 3 options with extra options if I go with #1. So this is what I'm thinking, #1 paint the trans black (If I go this route, then I need to decide if I go, gloss, semi-gloss of flat although I would lean towards semi gloss). #2 paint the trans the same colour as the engine or #3 don't paint it at all. The engine is painted Ford green (model A colour) with black oil pan n(semi gloss). Thoughts?

I would paint your transmission with the same Ford green you used on the engine. We recently rebuilt a 35 transmission for a fellow Barners fordor touring sedan and painted the transmission Ford green to match the engine. I'm pretty sure this would have been the paint combination on your truck transmission and engine as it came from the factory.

Some time back, I bought a used red tranny for my '39 pickup. The boys helping me rebuild and install it refused to do any work until I painted it engine green...

I have no idea what color Ford of Canada may have used originally in 1935. If originality is not a problem then engine color or black are both good choices. Folks won't pay much attention to the transmission anyway.

Another option is Cast Blast. A paint that looks similar to cast iron. I know in the later years, transmissions were not painted.

The engine and transmission effectively became a unit with the serial number for the assembly being on the transmission bell. Anyone know if the engine and transmission were painted separately or as a unit?

Re: Painting transmission.

Ford changed manufacturing and inter factory storage & distribution processes more than a few times over the years. In those early years most all the trucks had some variation of the Borg Warner T8 4-speed transmission so they may have kept them attached. Most would be a BB type package with the heavy duty clutch. Fords tendency to paint castings prior to assembly could have gone either way as far as color. They were all 85 HP 221 engines in the years after 1934 and before 1939 so the Ford dark green would be likely but I certainly don't know with any certainty. The serial was still on the transmission as far as I know so that would be the natural course of things Ford for that era.
