OT-Seattle vacation to do's
 

Hi All,


The GF/daughter and I are going to spend a few days in Seattle in Nov. What is there to do? I have a list already made up with some things on it like:


-Space Needle
-Science Center
-Pike's Place
-Aquarium
-Boeing factory tour
-Chihuly Glass garden
-locks between Lake Washington/Union
-Tillicum Native American village
-Fremont District
-Museum of pop culture
-Pioneer sq.
-Underground tour
-Lemay auto museum
-Any local bakery's/restaurants?


Anything else to try and check out? The daughter is 13 and into art/music and some video games.

There are two "LeMay" museums per se. One is the America's Auto Museum across from the Tacoma Dome. That one is more formal. The other is the LeMay Car Museum at Marymount. I enjoyed the Marymount one best as it's not as staged and is a casual environment. There are volunteer Docents who are extremely well versed. Depending on what atmosphere you prefer you can chose either place and enjoy.

Not sure about the Boeing factory tour but the Museum of flight is a winner. Seattle art museum and Tacoma art museum. If you are planning to visit AMC (America's car Museum) Johnny's doc restaurant is pretty nice and very close to the museum.

What about that fish market where they Chuck the fish at each other.
I went to pioneer square and asked someone about those shops below the street level, he said don't bother it stinks down there.
Nice fish restaurants on the many peirs.

That's the fish market at the main entrance to the Pike St. Market. They do throw the fish and it is pretty fun to watch. Does smell like fish, but what open air fish market doesn't? The rest of Pike St Market is pretty large and you can get all kinds of t-shirts, gifts, mugs, jewelry starving-artist art and much more. Some things are worth the money and some things are just trinkets.

Space Needle is definitely worth going. I hear they recently installed a glass floor. (Read $$ Pricey) They certainly didn't have that in 1962. The museum of flight at Boeing Field is a must-see thing too. If you have any interest in telephony, the Museum of Communications (an old telephone company switching office) is still operable and right near the museum of flight.

I don't think the old-town underground tour would be anything more than a come-on.

The science center (at the base of the space needle) is a great thing to see.

Fremont district is a whole area of artistic creativity and some starving artists. Lots of "different" stuff. A sign coming into Fremont says something like "Welcome to Fremont, the center of the Universe, Please set your watches back 5 minutes"

Seattle is a great place for everything except traffic. You have the main North/South freeway system (I-5) and its various feeders and I-90. Because of the Puget Sound on one side, Lake Union in the middle and Lake Washington separating, you have a snarled traffic system. From as far south as Olympia then North to nearly the Canadian border, you have non-stop freeways and traffic.

Still a great place to visit!

University of Washington has art galleries and museums if that is of interest at all to you.

In 1988 I spent several months TDY in Seattle on a support call.

Ivar's Fish and Chips "to die for".

Not sure if same folks are running it now but was fabulous in 1988!

There was an Ivar's right on the water near Space Needle or Pike Fish Market.

I spent a lot of time at Safeguard Insurance Data Center, inland somewhere. Campus was inside of a large dense forest of trees. Ivar's near the motel there was good also.

Got kids?, go to Funko in Everett, if you don’t know your kids most likely do. It is visited by people from around the world. Becoming the must see must have destination.

We really enjoyed the San Juan ferry. You need a full day for this though.

If you like ferry rides a shorter trip might be: Try the Mukilteo to Clinton ferry.

It is goes to Whidbey Island on highway 526 and 525 as I remember. THen you can go north on 525 across the island to large suspension bridge across Deception Pass and to town of Anacortes and back down US 5 to Seattle again.

Burl Ives used to live in or near Anacortes.

You have all of the main things down. Seattle is not a large city and is easy to cover quickly. Underground tour is a must.

We have lived north of Seattle in rural Snohomish/Monroe area for 40 Yrs. Your list covers all the big attractions. Be prepared for heavy traffic in the Seattle area & bring plenty of warm clothes, Nov. in the PNW can be very cold & wet. A great day trip would be the Mukilteo Ferry, go through Greenbanks & go up through Oak Harbor on Hwy. 20, go over the Deception Pass bridge toward Anacortes. Then go into LA Conner (walk around a bit). Take the Best Rd. to the Pioneer Hwy & get back on I-5 at Island Crossing to head south. You'll need a map. We just did this trip last week-end in our Model A's. You can stay in Everett & go to the Boeing Museum at Paine Field & Funco in Everett. Anthony's Rest. in the Everett Marina is one of our favorite restaurants. The early bird dinner before 6PM is four courses. The Burnt Cream dessert is a real treat.

Are the Knead and Feed and Blueberry Hill food stops still there near Coupeville?

In 1988 the Navy jets were doing "Touch and Goes" at Oak Harbor Naval Air Station. Came in hot at throttle, Drop the rear wheels on the PSP (Perforated Steel Plate) for about 1/2 revolution and Afterburner outta dahar!
