Muffler help

Does anyone know what this muffler I have fits? I ordered a complete kit from Waldrons for my ‘36 Pickup and this is the muffler they sent me. It doesn’t fit. I found a diagram on this forum of what a ‘36 muffler should have for inlet and outlet and it’s different from what I have. The body of the muffler is about 17” long. FYI- The mufflers seam in both pictures is at 12 o’clock.

Any thoughts?

Re: Muffler help

It's just a generic replacement muffler. When the folks here swear by Waldrons for exhaust parts, you see now that what they sell is not exactly like the orginal Ford system. Some modifications required to fit. It's the same old story with reproduction parts. Here is what I've learned. There is no good substitution for NOS.

Re: Muffler help

I think anyone that does this type of work understands that nothing tops NOS parts. Unfortunately NOS is not always an option. I’m working with Waldrons now to resolve the issue. I sent them pictures of what they sent me as well as the diagram of the 35/36 muffler I posted here, which looks to have the correct orientation to fit my pickup. Waldrons told me that what I need is a 39-40 muffler according to the depiction in the attached 35/36 diagram. Does anyone know what the orientation of the inlet/outlet is for a 39-40 muffler?

Re: Muffler help

That 6 o'clock inlet, 10 0'clock outlet orientation of the inlet and outlet pipes when viewed from the rear is critical in '35 and up chassis given the X-shaped center cross member. Many an otherwise perfect chassis frame has been spoiled by non-Ford muffler replacements that required altering the openings in the center cross member in order to fit.

Re: Muffler help

Several years ago Roy Nacewicz made a correct replacement muffler just like the diagram in Post #1 so there were some correct reproduction mufflers out there but likely they are all being put to use by now. You might want to check with Michael at ThirdGen to see what he might have for you.

Also, be aware that the big truck universal replacement muffler (Part No. 48-5230-C) for the same time period is identical to the diagram in Post #1 with the exception that the outlet pipe is located at about 10 to 11 o'clock when looking at the outlet end so it's different that than the car and commercial (pickup) muffler. So, at first glace a muffler looks correct, just be sure to check the outlet orientation before buying a muffler so you aren't disappointed.

Re: Muffler help

I certainly won't be cutting up a frame just to fit a muffler. Waldrons tells me the muffler they sent me is correct, but it obviously isn't. Let's see how they handle this. If anybody has an NOS muffler, I'll buy it.

Isn't that the same as in the 35/36 car diagram?

I got a replacement type muffler last summer from 3rd Gen Automotive for my driver quality '37 Ford. I also got a NOS crossover, header pipe and tailpipe. It all fit together pretty well. No issues with the inlet and outlet on the muffler. I could have bought a NOS muffler for $300+, however this was a driver and I'd save that for a nicer car. I have one NOS truck muffler left. I got that from 3rd Gen also.

Re: Muffler help

I’m glad to hear you are giving Waldrons a chance to remedy the problem and troubleshoot with you. My experience with them was all good for a stainless system on my 41 pickup. No fitment issues, I picked it up as I passed through their neck of the woods, and when the muffler was back ordered in Canada, they sent it to me with free shipping.

Re: Muffler help

OldGold360 - I'm not sure what you mean in your post "Isn't that the same as in the 35/36 car diagram?" I'm just saying that you should be aware that the car (and pickup) muffler is the same as the truck muffler except for the position of the outlet pipe. It's easy to get them confused unless you know the difference. The illustration in your first post is what you are looking for: 48-5320-B.

Sorry. I think I misunderstood what you were saying in your previous post. I think I thought you meant that the outlet for the truck mufflers was at the 10 o’clock position, which would make it the same as the car or pickup. Do you know what position the outlet is on a truck?

Hello,

My '36 Ford pickup new Muffler from Waldron's fit perfectly (no cutting of frame required).

SORRY, I do not remember the Inlet and Outlet orientations.

Re: Muffler help

Now I see my error. The truck muffler outlet is at 2 o'clock or the opposite side of the centerline. Sorry for the confusion.

Dave,

Those with the 2 o'clock outlet position are also the post-'34 service mufflers for 1932-34 passenger cars and commercial vehicles as the '35s are the first where the muffler and muffler inlet pipe are separate components. The attachment is an example of when they were still one piece.

Re: Muffler help

As an aside, note that the NOS pipe is mandrel bent without any of what I call "muffler shop kinks".

Re: Muffler help

The original exhaust system for Model 51 trucks uses a one piece muffler assembly for 1935 and 1936 vehicles. It looks very similar to the one shown in DavidG's image. The two-piece design with a "Y" pipe and separate muffler for trucks came out after 1936.
