‘29 Tudor Gas tank lace

I installed the original style welt (with the wire) on the gas tank. I’ve cut the welt 1 inch on both sides of the hook at the center and tightened the hook as much as possible, but it seems the hood is sitting too high. I can’t get the lines between the tank and cowl to line up with the side hinge line. I’m wondering if it’s the wrong welt or if these lines are supposed to match perfectly. The hood was with the car when I bought it, but it wasn’t installed, no idea if it’s the original or not. Other than that the fit is pretty good.

Photos? The hood latches will pull the hood in somewhat. Hood alignment is always a pain., especially if you have had the body off.

Yes, the body’s been off, the gas tank and cowl have been off and separated from each other, new radiator and new radiator shell. I played around with the lace on the gas tank and there’s improvement, but not exactly right yet. I have new hood shelves and latches, but haven’t put them on yet.

Dean,

It could be that the welting is slightly thicker than that of the original welting.

Is the welting the type with the wire inside the welting itself?

Did you put any type of material between the tank and the Hood Hinge Rod Retainer? If so this could raise the hood slightly.

I know over time the compression of the hood and the welting will flaten the welting to a point where the lines will line up better.

Actually, from that one picture, the alignment does not look bad at all. Hard to tell without looking at both sides, but if the other side looks as good as the one shown, I would stop right there and call it good.

Both sides are the same. The wire is on top of the welt, not in it. I took the welt completely off just to experiment, and the lines matched up really well. There’s nothing under the center hinge rod retainer, but it is a new one. Maybe I can “pre-flatten” the welt. Honestly, I’m not terribly dissatisfied with it, just trying to get it as close as possible. Thanks for the responses.

The wire actually threads through the center of the lacing with a gap in the center for the hook.

Thanks Bill. I didn’t know that.

Here is a link to an older thread that talks about that.
