Date of manufacture question.

Well I know the engine that is in my '31 roadster is wrong as the number doess not match the title. What I cannot seem to find is an answer to this question, when did say the Model years change ? Like September or October like when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties? Specifically I am trying to find out this the engine number is A 2572898 and I think I have found that is a late 1929 number but my question is was it in a '29 or a '30? Again I do not know the year changeover date for the following year models.Thank you .

Re: Date of manufacture question.

Looks like early part of Nov 1929 so it could have been in an early 1930,if you
figure a couple of month lag between serial number stamping and chassis installation.

Re: Date of manufacture question.

So in those days the Model Year was definitely in the model year not the two or three months before the new year? A 1930 would have been made or sold no earlier than 1930?

Radiator wheels and tail light are all good clues as to 29 or 30. Of course things might have been changed over the years. I suppose the only way to tell for sure is to get the frame number.

In 1929 the A was selling good, as a matter of fact it was the best year of the 4. With 1.7 million cars made the time between the engine being tested and installed would have been short.

Re: Date of manufacture question.

Well,I don't know how accurate this information is but it is in a book I have had for years that shows Ford serial numbers and manufacture dates>It is an Old Cars Krause book that I spent most of the day looking for. States 1929 started with serial# A 810123 ending A 2742695.1930 started with the A 2742696 to A 4237500.So the engine in my 1931 is a 1929 engine.I assume back in those day then the new Model A year was actually the new year.

Our 1929 Sport Coupe engine date (tested) 6/15/29, firewall stamped 6/18/29. Engine and frame have matching numbers.

They were moving them out fast. Enjoy.

Re: Date of manufacture question.

I've only seen lists that show engine numbers by month. Where can I find one that lists the day? Is there any info on where a particular engine, or batch, was shipped?

One of the forums members has a chart on engine testing dates.

Hopefully they will read this tread and respond. I will try to find it also.

Try Modelahouse.com, go to technical information, first category, than go to engine date calculator.

Info is out there.

There are not just one but many senarios and many factors in the assembling of the Model A/AA Ford and all seem to work one way or the other.

The BEST way is when you are working with an ORIGINAL assembled vehicle, one assembled in very late 1927, 1928-1931 and even 1932, where you have the ORIGINAL Assembly Plant Bill of Sale of said vehicle that you are trying to determine its build date.

The SECOND best way is when you have the ORIGINAL Dealership Bill of Sale.

The WORST way is when you have a Model A/AA Ford that was assembled from a frame over there, a body over here, an engine from that way, etc.

This is "hear-say" only and just how true it is I have no idea but may seem plausable but before the Ford Rotunda fire back in the 1960's I believe, there contained a whole bunch of old archival information. One of the items that supposedly got destroyed was a list of just where all those stamped Model A/AA Ford engines went to as far as assembly plants are concerned...if this is true, we had just lost something of great value.

The 1930 models began production in late November 1929.

Steve, Thanks for posting the document. Had not broken the #s down before. I have a new appreciation of what Henry accomplished. 4000 - 12000 units a day

Re: Date of manufacture question.

1928 models, tudor and roadster were arriving at the large metro cities, mostly for preview by public and local news photographers on Dec 3, 1927. Limited body styles and salesmen were to start taking orders. Don't sell the two cars that we have, keep them to show.
