where o where to find a correct size 40-53 battery

So I am trying to find a correct size 2HF 6v battery for my 46 Pickup. One that fills the battery box as well as the hold down. All I can find is those $400 Ford script jobs for show cars. Does anyone know where to buy a good old 10.5 x 7 inch battery without spending so much for a original 35,000 mile vehicle we plan to drive every day??

If you have a O Reilly’s in your area I just purchased their conventional battery, fills the box and hold down on my 48 car perfectly and turns it over real good.

I got my last battery from O'rielly's when the 13 year old optima died. was around a hundred bucks and was listed as the replacement for the stock battery, although it was a hair taller. no fit problems, works great. The only reason I did not get another optima was the price.

I see you intend to make your truck a daily driver. A friend in Pierre S.D. says it is virtually impossible and driving rules are very restrictive. You can only drive pleasure ( no work ), parades and club activities. Good luck ! .

You didn’t say which part of the country your from but Tractor Supply has 6 volt batteries in several sizes, for that matter most farm stores should have a good selection.

There is a fellow on Ebay that sells the original case that has never been assembled. It's top is slightly customized underneath so you can put a optima red top inside it and it will look correct with all of the benefits of the optima . I did this in my 46 Cadillac and will be doing it in my 41 pickup. If you have the old battery you can do this conversion your self as my good friend did. It took him a afternoon and looks great .

Re: where o where to find a correct size 40-53 battery

Fords used both the BCI group 1 and group 2 batteries in the 6-volt era. A lot depends on the size of the battery box. While there were variations in size of these batteries back in the 6-volt era, this is not the case in the modern era. NAPA and O'Reilly's still carry one or more of these group types or they can likely order them.

The group 1 size is: 9" L X 8.75" H X 6.875" W and was used in the older cars and a lot of tractors.

The group 2 size is: 10.375" L X 8.75" H X 6.875" W and was used in the later cars that needed a bit higher cranking amps for better reliability.

It's hard to tell now days who sells the lowest price battery of those that still carry them. The lower priced ones for cheap skates like me would have the higher probability of being a freshly manufactured battery. Manufacture date is critical for a wet cell lead acid battery. The newer it is the longer it will last for the most part unless the manufacturer doesn't have any quality control in their process.

McMimmcs, I don’t think the police would be tracking how often someone drives their antique.

These rules come from the type of license you request and/or what insurance you have, not the car you drive.

I think it was insurance requirements not the state!

In Oregon the type of license you request (special interest/antique) can carry restrictions on use. Every State can be different.

Once in a pinch, I bought a group 1 battery for my '51. I always had a problem starting the car when hot with it. I replaced it with a Group 2 (2H maybe). and the problem went away. The group 1 batteries are pretty small compared to the proper size.
