'42-'48 Axles into '36

Anyone fitted the front and rear axles from the later Fords into a '36?

I know their wider but does 1/4" on the front and 1" or so on the back make them completely un-workable?

Thanks

Get a 33 to 36 axle … the 42 to 8 is way to wide and the wishbone that fits it won’t fit your car.

I have a 42-48 axle under the front and rear of my '36 coupe. The front axle, 2" drop, '41 spindles, '36 wish bone, '42-48 spring, '40 steering gears with a '36 pitman. The front shocks are tube type using an aftermarket adapter kit.
The rear axle is a '42-48 Columbia, '36 banjo/torque tube, '37-39 radius bars, 47-48 spring, tube shocks with the '48 style of panhard/sway bar..
I opted for the later model front axle because a dropped axle is generally narrower than stock, which make the front wheels look funny being set in from the fenders. The wider rear axle is not that noticeable with the position of the tires in the fender opening..
My tires are 600 x 16 on '39 wheels/drums .. '42-48 brakes front and rear... The next time I buy tires they will be radials..

I know the 42 uses a different spring and shackel kit. The 42 uses the early type. the 36 spring is a 1 3/4 and the 42 is longer and a 2" unit. I'm looking for a 46-48 spring for my project. Note: the 46-48 shackels hang vertically . Which lowers the front some, and requires a swaybar.

Ol' Ron, I thought the 1 3/4 " spring ended in 1934 and the 2" spring started in '35.

I guess I'll have to throw in with TJ on this one.. I have several '36 and later front/rear springs.. They are all 2' wide.. Throughout the years I have done several upgrades to the suspension/brakes on several '36 and later Fords.. Never had a problem using later springs in the '36 cross member/chassis..
The '36/41 springs will have small spring eyes, where-as the '42-48 will have larger eyes which use a rubber bushing in lieu of the the pressed in shackle pins..
Ol'Ron is correct that the design of the '42-48 shackles will require the use of a tracking/sway bar..
The attached pix shows the Columbia rear end under my '36 Ford.. The whole setup can be clearly seen..

The front axle assembly is currently out of my car.. It had been several years (1963) since I had done any suspension work on my car.. I decided to do a complete upgrade on the brakes, new lines, hoses, etc.. I discovered that all of the spring bushings and the rubber mount for the wishbone was in bad shape, so I removed everything..
When I finish the front end I am going to remove the rear axle assembly, to do a complete freshening up of the whole assembly..
Since the front axle is out from under the car, sometime during the next few days I'll take some pix of the front axle assembly and post them on this thread.. In the mean time I have attached a few of the current pix of my car.
I am the second owner of this car, It has been under my care for 61 years.
