The new ones have less wire in them so they are not as powerful as original Ford coils. They are fine for an electric fence though. Also they come with the wrong value capacitors so if you do buy them you would need to change the capacitors to have any chance of running well. Then adjust on a hand cranked coil tester or Strobe - O - Spark. Yes I know they are advertised to be properly adjusted and set up professionally.

Better option is to buy original coils and have them rebuilt by Ron the Coilman.

I used the new wooden coils for years & found they were just fine.

They may have been made when they were being made properly. I have a half dozen KW coils with manufacture dates in the 1940's. I sent them to Ron the Coilman and he was able to rebuild them and they will test just like a real one from the 1920's. Some of the earlier plastic coils are OK too.

It's just recently (say in the past 5 - 10 years) that they started using the crap innards. If you send one of those to Ron he will call and offer to either send it back at your expense or toss it in the trash can for free.

Thanks for the input fellas, I have 8 original coils going out this week to the coil Doctor. I thought it might be worth spending for some new coils (4) but can get 8 originals done for roughly the same amount.
