Black fender paint
 

Time to correct the front fenders on my ‘31 Mail Truck. When I got her, she had a welled left instead of the standard. And a standard right instead of the well for the spare. I found two good standard front fenders recently. Bill Gift in Chambersburg did a beautiful job installing a wheel well in the right one. They’re bead blasted, primed and under coated on the insides. Now prepping the primer for sealer and top coat.

Question is, what is your preference for the black top coat? Locally, Nason is available or Eastwood via the catalog. I could use Ranthane urethane from an aircraft supplier.

Point is, this is a driver that I want to take care of. It will never be judged without a total body rebuild. Factory original paint is not a priority. Good looks and durability are. Thanks!

The 'Correct Answer'......use what ever black the other sheet metal is painted in for a color match. Yes, there are different shades of black. What material did the original restorer use ?


That said, I'd stay local with Nason...and use their line of primers etc. for compatibility.

I always thought the driver entered & exited on the right, thus the left spare.

The Post Office spec was for a right spare well and sliding doors for driver safety. There was only one seat. The slider was a believed a safer way to exit into the road than with a swinging door. The curb side spare was considered safer as well.

The sliding doors would allow the trucks to be parked closer when backed up to the dock for loading purposes.

I choose DuPont's Nason single stage urethane for its durability, ease of touch-up and comparable lower cost. Gloss without color sanding is excellent. Very little orange peel.

I'm not a painter. You might also want to check with the guy who primed them and ask what primer he used.



Make sure the products you're using are compatible with what he used.

Looking great. I’m thinking Nason is the solution for those reasons. Their sanding sealer will seal the primer already applied. Thanks.

I like and use a lot of sherwin Williams 2nd dimension single stage. Color sands and buffs great now and 10 years from now.
You have to get from sherwin Williams auto paint store or jobber.

I like to use acrylic urethane jet black (gloss) from TCP Global @ $59.96 per quart. Beautiful smooth gloss finish that looks like you could jumb into a black hole! Ed
