Tool for removing tapered parts
 

I have used this tool for both modern & EV8 Fords, and works great for tie rod ends, and other taper seat parts. I just used it to get that tough to get at shock link out of the radius rod next to the backing plate. I didn't think it would work in that limited space, but it did the job in no time. I believe it was about $30. 1o years ago, and has paid for itself many times over.

I'm really annoyed because I had one just like that, it has served me well over the years. I also used it to remove the rear shock studs.

I managed to very slightly bend the part that surrounds the joint. I straightened it in the press, and wanting it to go just a bit more I gave it another pull on the press and it snapped! I should have left it alone. I doubt anything I can buy today will be as good.

Serves me right for trying to fix something that wasn't actually broke.

Nice that they are still available. That one doesn't look quite as beefy as the one Russ has.

Did a little search and found that KD Tools and OTC have similar ones, look stronger than the one on amazon. I refuse to buy anything from amazon.

We use a tool commonly known as a "pickle fork". It is a tapered heavy fork that is placed between the parts and whacked enough to do the job. I still have mine from my days as a Ford mechanic in the 1950's. Look for a SnapOn or other tool dealer to get one.

A picklefork is only good if you are throwing the part into the garbage after removing it...any rubber seals and often part itself gets damaged using it...
I have a few different styles pullers and the best is made from Facom and has adjustable gap.

Right, the puller is the preferred way to go, rather than beating the part using a "pickle fork". Plus, if you don't have a new rubber boot you can use it over, with the pickle fork, it's usually ruined.

Got a couple PMs asking who made it. It has KD 3918 stamped on it. Forgot to add that it often takes a good rap with a heavy bludgeon to unseat the taper. The thing also take a beating and comes up smiling as if to say "you couldn't hurt me if you tried" It is one tough tool.
