34 ignition lock I have been looking but so far not found a replacement 34 car ignition barrel .
We have the drop and barrel ,the barrel is still in column drop, but as usual some forgotten lovely person has broken the key off inside the lock. So i know its fiddly getting the barrel out of the early drops, do we need a new barrel or can we get the broken key out of the old one? |
Re: 34 ignition lock I was able to get a broken key out of a 34 ignition lock by soaking the key area and using a screw driver to move the tumbler back and forth. Then with a sharp pick I was able to pry against the tooth side of the key to remove the broken part. It is worth a try.

Re: 34 ignition lock Once the lock cylinder is removed from the drop the key should be able to be pushed out from the rear. The key has to be in the column lock position. The key teeth will be 180 degrees from the retaining pin.
If the cylinder is in the drop and you want to try the previous post the cylinder lock position is with the key teeth up. don't mar the face of the cylinder it's made of soft brass. |
Re: 34 ignition lock I would try VERY hard to get that key out. If you are lucky enough to find an original lock cylinder, they are quite expensive. And, I used an aftermarket cylinder, which worked, but was never very good, and certainly not nearly as good as an original. I'd do everything possible to save that cylinder.

Re: 34 ignition lock Thanks guys, I did not realise the early cylinders we so special. With no decent aftermarket replacement.
Its my sons car so he can have the pleasure of removing the cylinder. |

Re: 34 ignition lock 1 Attachment(s)
Success , soaked the cylinder in penetrating oil overnight. Once I realised the key was broken off in the on position and rotated the lock , got out some old dentist picks and some small pliers . Now the fun part will be getting the cylinder out to get a new key made.
Tried the key of our 32 ,while looking similar it would not even go in. Might need to get one of those kits for cylinder pin removal. |
Re: 34 ignition lock With the broken off key as a pattern, any [good] locksmith should be able to simply copy it. No need to remove barrel

Re: 34 ignition lock Yep I did wonder about that .
Will we see you at the swap meet? |
Re: 34 ignition lock Nah, I won't be attending; that'll give you a bit more of a chance to get goodies lol, enjoy the blizzard.

I've never been able to work out why the swap meet is outside and the car display is inside at the Rod swap meet during winter in the Manawatu. In October for the VCC swap meet we reverse it . Manfeild stadium is the largest single span stadium in the Southern hemisphere and we fill it every year with sellers -No worries with weather at all - However if you can cope with the weather better stuff at the rod meet and more realistic prices -I guess I'm buying peoples unwanted original stuff Karl |
Re: 34 ignition lock Usually the door lock and the ignition lock share the same key. Take the door lock out and get a key to fit that....the code is stamped into the side of the barrel. Might be lucky.

if code off the the tumbler and a good key blank is present. any good old lock smith can make a key with the tumbler numbers. . . |
Re: 34 ignition lock As Brian said , found a “good” locksmith and with a little patience they cut two good keys from the broken stub . So as some advised try very hard to get the broken key out and don’t remove the barrel . So for once we listened.
