59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

I've been undecided on keeping the fan up on the generator, (which is really what I wanted at first), or going with the later assy. on the 2nd belt down below.

I like the original fan look, and aside from a slight lowering and solid wheels I'm pretty much a stock coupe (12v gen).

I was even considering installing an additional electric fan lower in front of the rad to help with cooling.

I would be interested in what people thought pro and con.

I have a 36 3 window coupe with a 59 block hooked up to a stock 36 trans. I used the old 36 gen. housing and installed 60's Ford 12v fields and now have a 40 amp 12v generator, with regulator mounted on the inside of firewall. I left to engine compartment free of any extra gadgets. I installed the original 36 fan . It will run 160-170 degrees & on days of 90 it will run 180 in either head.No need for an auxiliary fan as of yet.
There is a place in Calif (a Ed Whitney )that installs a 12v alt. in a 36 housing that will produce 70 amps. Looks almost original , the guts are from a Mitsubusi alternator. This will also used with original fan.
Hope this helped
Bill

Re: 59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

Thanks Bill, I know there are issues concerning the rpm's needed to operate an alternator vs. a generator. I also know that, with some people, there are concerns with mounting a fan on the front of a alt., like with the Powgen alternator. And there are some who just don't like a fairly heave metal 4 blade fan swing in the breeze basically out in the open.

At this point I'm not really sure which way I want to go. I may even scrap the gen system to be able to go to a pointless ign. system.

My main concern is with cooling, was the fan moved lower for this reason, and did it make a big difference?

The major concern when addressing this fan issue in a 35 is the constraint created by the design; there is no room to position a fan anywhere else but off of the front of the generator. Brian

Re: 59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

Thanks Brian, Now that you mention this, and thinking about the clearance between the stock dist and the radiator on the '35, the 59 block with the fan pulley assy. on the front of the block won't work will it?

I have everything apart at present so I'm in no position to measure anything, but I'm just thinking about the fin damage on the radiator in the dizzy area, it didn't occur for no reason.

So what about all these 59 blocks in early v8s? I know I've seen a lot of one wire alts, and no fan up there, are they all elect fans on the front???

Possibly, otherwise they are running sans fan; the fan becomes redundant once the car is motoring down the road as airflow is being forced through the radiator. Not good in stop/start traffic!

The fin damage on the radiator in the dizzy area is caused by rough removal/installation of the distributor. There certainly isn't much room down there either. One reason I run a crab distributor in my 35; it is shorter overall, which aids in removal etc. Brian

I reckon many have had the engine set back.

I have a 53 merc in a 35, no room for a fan inside. I found a fan and shroud at the junk yard I think from a ford contour ( may have been a late escort), after some fitting its behind the grill working as a pusher. Seems to cool well, but is a little noisy. Good luck

I have a delco alternator with the fan mounted on the pulley. I had to do some machine work to make the pulley work, but that was pretty straight forward. Have others had reliability issues with this arrangement?

Also, a local starter alternator shop built me the alternator from an AC unit that starts charging at very low RPM.
Thanks

I have a 59 AB in my 36 5W.I had Whitney do my 39 std alt and I used the 36 fan..Those alt conversions are 40 amp.All works excellent.

Re: 59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

I just acquired a 59A that has 2 pulleys on the crankshaft. The aft one is in the plane for the water pump pulleys while the front one is about 3" forward. Does that forward one drive a fan like a 8BA setup that has the two bolts in the slide adjustment? Is there enough room in a '36 passenger car set up for this type of fan on a 59A?

The quick and easy way to install a fan on a 59 A engine conversion is to use a '39 generator which is a two brush generator with a voltage regulator in lieu of the '35-36 cutout.
The fan will be running in its stock position and therefore not come into conflict with the radiator or ignition.
The engine in my '36 is highly modified with a wide spread Offie super manifold. I have a side mount generator.. For a fan I cut a '39 generator down using the mounting portion and fan blade.... This setup has been working for over 50 years and 94,000 miles with no problems. Of course I add a few drops of oil to the bearing oiler cup every 1,000 miles

Re: 59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

just finished putting the 59a in the 35 (a couple months ago). had help. works great. original fan on a modified gen bracket to allow room for trip carbs. had to change the double crank pully to single of course and go with an offset generator bracket. im using the single wire alt powermaster from h&h flatheads. i had to have the nut on the alt machined down to allow the fan to go by (1/4" or so). The pully is so small, there is no more "reving" (at all) to get the alt to trigger. its excellent as far as that goes. I have about 3/4" to the stock radiator. no trouble so far and have put 1000 miles on the car since. still using the same stock tranny. headers fit ok around stock steeing box. and new motor mounts. if you look at my old posts. these plenty showing my struggle. If a was to do it again, i would...it would only take me 2000 hours less time. (plus or minus of course). Have fun CP.

Is there room to run it off the crank like some the '39/40's did?

Re: 59a in a '35, where to mount the fan???

59A was just installed (mocked up for fit) in my 35 Coupe - engine was moved back 3/8th inch - standard crab style distributor was used and the fan was mounted on it's own bearing/pulley adjusted off the previous generator mount on the intake with the generator moved over to the passenger side, This shot is in process and new custom fan pulley was not installed yet but you can get the idea. Radiator is stock.
