Tractor carburetors

Anyone have experience with carbs from tractors on their A?

Couple of examples from eBay like these.

Or

Not that I’d buy these as I’d assume these are cheap Chinese quality but I’m sure you can get a nice original that could be rebuilt.

Wondered about this for a while and after reading the marvel carb thread, it got me thinking again.

Fcub too small. used one would be likely more than $45.00. N ford likely closer. need to match displacement of engines at a starting point. New zenith repo. or start going to swapmeets.

I have a massey 165. I have had a Marvel Schebler and a Zenith on this tractor, I prefer the Zenith, it has a high speed jet adjustment. With that said as I think about your question, Carbs for a tractor or for a auto were designed keeping in mind the needs of the vehicle they were made for. A tractor pretty much runs at low RPM most of the time or with implements running at 540 off the pto, so the power curve for the engine and carb get set up to be at the speed the engine will be used most. On a car, such as a model A Ford, speed and engine speed vary a lot more and on an automobile, a Carb is designed to run from Idle to full speed and sometimes hold at full speed a lot more than on a tractor. What I am basically saying is a carb is designed for its intended use. You can play around and experiment but I would suggest finding a Marvel Schebler for a Model A ford. They are around and there was a Marvel Schebler sold by Sears under a Sears model number.

The ford 8n carb has a different hole spacing for mounting.

If you are looking for a good running car, you need a correct carburetor.

Years ago, had a Ford Model 1841 loader. 4cyl. OHV with an updraft carb. Can't remember who built the carb, or if it would have bolted up to an A manifold, but never had a problem with it for 20 years.

The answer to your question you sure almost any carburetor off a tractor updraft will work on Model A with an updraft manifold to make it perform correctly you have to match the intake hole from the carburetor to match the hole in the manifold. You can go as far and use a bigger carburetor intake whole and hug the manifold out to match it it doesn't make any difference the jetting is what makes the difference in how your car will run and as far as the reference goes about steady RPM on a tractor versus a car you will find that the governor does all that work

Zenith makes a modern Model A replacement carburetor that works great. It is NOT for a fine point car but it works well otherwise.

These Zeniths are "Air Balanced" and work well with an air filter.
