Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger Fellow Ford Barners, I can not find the thread. I cleaned out my cooling system with vinegar then baking soda.I have 3gallons of distilled water. What do I mix with the water, so it doesn't rust and runs cool?. Thanks for all your help. This my be a duplicate post, if so sorry I can not find the one I did 2 hours ago.

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger I would mix it with anti freeze/summer coolant. Around Monterey a 50/50 mix is fine since it hardly ever freeezes and never a hard freeze. I prefer Propylene glycol ( Sierra or the other "green" anti freezes) to the common Ethylene Glycol. The Propylene types foam less in a non pressurized situation, and are not toxic to dogs, cats, kids and fish like the Ethylene type is.

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger anti freeze is the best, but you can put a pint can of soluble oil in the water, some times called water pump lube, most parts houses have it or will order it for you, but be aware it can be messy if the rad blows out water, and it has no freezing protection

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger My choice is distilled water and Rust inhibitor No. 1300 napa one bottle.

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger Ditto what Gary says, especially where it doesn't freeze.

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger antifreeze
|
Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger I use tap water and a quart or so of antifreeze. I drain it for the winter. I'd use creek water if I needed to...<grin>

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger I use Prestone brand 50/50 Mix.

You are paying antifreeze price for water. It is much cheaper to mix your own. MIKE :) (mikeburch) |

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger There is some controversy having to do with distilled water and corrosion.
|
Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger I realize it is cheaper to mix my own but something can be said for convenience. I could make my own butter and ice cream but I don't because it is not convenient.
Regular Prestone is $12.49 and 50/50 is $8.49 and the extra few dollars won't break me and it is worth it for the convenience ! Wayne |

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger If you are not in an area subject to freezing, I would use Red Line Water Wetter which in my experience also assists the motor to run a little cooler.
It certainle reduces the chance of corrosion between dissimilar metals Keith |
Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger Sort of off topic, but I saw the Red Line post and have a question about that. It is a "water wetter," is it not? If it indeed is then it is just a soap that breaks down the viscosity of the water, right? I have friends, near Monterey, that use a cup of dishwasher soap for a water wetter. They seem perfectly happy with the results. Any comments welcome.
Later, Daveymc, Danville, CA Seldom freeze here also. |
Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger What Do You Folks Think About Water Wetter ??

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger Do a search and you will find some post not necessarily positive about water wetter as it relates to radiators.

Re: Filling radiator after cleaning with vineger Davey, I'm no chemist but a few drops of soap will destroy the surface tension of the water and "may" allow for better cooling. Ether will do it too. Some people spray soap and water on their lawns. When you see water beading up on the leaves of plants that is surface tension. With soap the water will coat the leaves.
I'm no physicist either but I'd play one on TeeVee. |
