Mounting Tires on Wide Fives in Chicago?
 

Hi all
Looking for a tire shop in Chicago to mount tires on my wide five wheels. Anyone know a shop that has an adapter and is familiar with these?

In Texas mounting is not a problem, balancing is. The tire mounting machine at Discount Tire, where I went, gripped the wheel at the rim, not at the center. I got a reduced price on the "mount and balance" since they could not balance. I got really lucky, my tires run smooth with no balance weights at all.

To balance my wide 5s, i use a old Hunter balancer. The balancer hub mounts on your wheel on the car and you spin the front wheels with an electric motor and spin balance it. On the rear, you put a driver in the seat and jack up one side at a time and put the car in gear and spin the rear wheel to balance it. Marv

I purchased a wheel adapter from speed way for wide 5 rims. I used it for mounting and balancing tires. worked great.

I did the same thing as 36 flathead, though I got mine used from a circle burner guy, cost me more to get the 5/8 lug nuts than what I gave for the adapter. If you go used you need to make sure it runs true. As stated earlier it's more for balance use than mounting as most shops have the rim clamping machines.

I use a set of motorcycle spoons and mount my own tires. I also have a portable bead breaker that makes it easy to get started. As for the balance, I didn't do it(all the tire shops say Huh?), but I like the idea of the adapter.

i just had a tire removed from a kelsey-hayes wire wheel, once the bead was broken from the rim the guy had the machine open the 4 clamps up on the platform of the machine and placed the wheel on the clamps, he then had the clamps grab the bottom of the rim to hold in place, he used the tire iron to open a gap between the rim and tire and had the arm hanging overhead unmount the tire a couple inches at a time untill it reached the half way point and then let the machine do the rest.
balancing the wide 5?? an adaptor as mentioned from the earlier posts.

Where are you located, Tom? Mounting should be no problem; I have an adapter that would help you with balancing. I'm in Glen Ellyn.

I second buying one of the adapters from speedway, i keep it in the car in case i run into trouble. John's Automotive in Chicago ridge (off the Kennedy) has old Fords and will mount and balance for you. I think I had to bring the adapter, I don't remember him having one. Call to make an appointment. I live downtown and keep a 36 Cabriolet there, with a warehouse up north. Where are you located?

I solved this problem many years ago when trying to get wheels balanced that did not fit on any of the standard machines. K-H wires are also problematic since you have to use the bolt pattern to center.
I used a '40 spindle, modified drums to get a 4 1/2" BC, another for a 4 3/4" BC, stock drum for the 5 1/2" BC. Opps, almost forgot...have a wide five drum for my '39. Made sure the wheel bearings were good as new, apply light oil, balance the drums with weights till it did not 'bottom out'...that is when spun, it stopped anywhere. When out of balance, heavy part goes to the bottom, naturally. Now that the drum is balanced, mount the wheel/tire and repeat the proceedure by taping weights on the rim edge. Proof is in the pudding.....works great and every time. Now, you may not want to go to all this trouble, but if you work on many different projects and over a longer period of time....sure saves a lot of grief. This is 'ole school' and not for 'techies'.......Robert
