NASCAR 1957 Ford
 

Back in 1957 ( I am told) Ford made a attempt to run a Supercharged car that ran afoul of the powers to be in NASCAR.
I am led to believe that the motor used a duel point distributor.
Would anyone know if it was a Mallory, Autolite,or Fomoco ,and what the number was ?

The Thunderbird Restoration Manual I have from CTCI shows an ID number of FEJ-12127-D for the distributors of the supercharged engines. It's my understanding they had dual points but I have no documentation.
Ref. 1949-1959 Ford Car Parts and Accessories Text Catalog, page 545
It was a FoMoCo distributor.

Are you looking for a dual point '57 Y-block distributor?

I had a posting here on the ford barn or the hamb this past year regarding the Roy Burdick family in Omaha that ran a 57 supercharged 300 2 dr sedan throughout the midwest it was said to be the same car that garnered the Pikes Peak hill climb record for it's class.

I believe it was early or midway in the '57 season when NASCAR banned super chargers, fuel injection and multiple carburetors. The rule was a single 4 barrel carb after that until fuel injection became mandatory in the 2000's.

FWIW. There were aftermarket breaker plates you could buy that converted your 57 distributor to dual points. Had one in my 57 until I switch it all to DuraSpark.

I am going to see a fellow who has a pile of 1950s y block parts and motors.I am just going to do some picking..I asked him if he had any distributors,and he kind of said yes when he said he had 5 y block motors.Both 292 and 312.they all had distributors,but he would not strip them.They were for sale,and I would have to buy them all. They were pretty cheap at only $350.00,but I really don,t need another motor sitting in the shop never mind 5.
However,if there is something interesting in the 5,well I may be made to pull the trigger..
But I understand he has a few barns and sheds,and I hope to see what's there.
I know what tach drive distributors to look for,and and some of the other goodys,but I was not informed on the duel points.

The kits by Dyna-Flyte show up now and then on ebay for about $50.
I've got a couple for the distributors in my Birds. They seem to work well so far, about 2000 miles on my red '55, with a '57 distributor on the 292.

Some of the factory dual point distributor setups may(?) have been put in the E code (dual 4bbl) distributors.
The E code distributors, normally w/ single points, have an ID of FEJ-12127-B2.

Before the electronic replacements, dual points could help reduce the 'float' of single points, gaining some rpm.
And with two sets of points dividing the electrical load, the contacts could last longer.

Bob Burdick is correct regarding the 57 they also fielded a 58 as well, he passed away several years ago his father Roy passed years ago & his Uncle Bud most recently. They each migrated to the NASCAR circuit, their biggest claim to fame with the big league was the 1959 Daytona 500 winning 430 powered Thunderbird driven by Johnny Beuchamp only to be overturned after a contested photo review. None the less quite a feat considering the distance factor & all.
