Best Black High Heat Paint that Dries Like it Should
 

I know, an odd question but what have you found for exhausts that actually does what it should? My question come from a miserable time I had with Rustoleum High Heat Black that I used to paint my outdoor grill. Sanded the grill and painted as instructed on the can (grill is an old Ducane all stainless panels). Dried the grill an instructed and used it to cook, all seemed well. Then I covered it up with the grill cover till next time. Imagine my surprise when I found the cover sticking to the grill because the paint was not totally dry! I went through this exercise twice with the same results. :eek: No one at Rustoleum could explain why it happened but they did refund my cost of the paint (big deal). What do you recommend?

I use VHT on exhaust stuff (manifolds blasted, pipes sanded), and have been happy with the results.

I use Rustoleum barbecue grill paint on radiators; the medium gloss looks right on them, to me.

LowdownA, the paint was dry, 10 days dry in the sun, as I said the instructions on the rattle can were followed to perfection. However, dry on the surface and not underneath. Nothing was said or implied regarding the ability to use a grill cover after that period of time. Something is obviously wrong with the instructions given or oil based paints are not the best thing to use for that purpose. I like Rustoleum products, the chassis on my coupe was painted with them. But something is definately wrong with the grill application.

MMMm I understand you followed the instructions on the can. Did the instructions mention heat curing or did you air cure it in the sun?

Don't feel bad. I had a similar experience not long ago. It wasn't high heat paint but it was rustoleum. I too followed the instruction on the can and ran into the same problems as you. The paint was dry to the touch after several days, but gummy underneath. I think rustoleum changed their formulas and its now junk paint. I won't buy any more. I switched to another brand and all is good now.

I gave up on removing and repainting the manifold and muffler every two years and had my manifold and muffler porcelainize close to 20 years ago and they still look pretty good. paint does not last.

I use rustoleum barbecue paint on my exhaust. I do not know how that compares with their high heat. I have had it on my roadster for 2 years and it has held up good. Has a good rep on HAMB also.

I have used it recently and it has not changed.

LowdownA, there is truth in what you say, however different solvents flash dry faster than others. Whatever solvent is the base of Rustoleum rattle can paints (and there may be different ones for different types) the one for High Temperature is too slow and depending on the depth of the coat will require a long period of time to cure all the way through. I plan on trying Krylon High Temperature paint next. I know that Krylon drys much faster than Rustoleum, as to whether it is any better or worse a paint I cannot say........

When I paint parts with VHT type paint I heat em up in the grill to about 500 degrees and then spray them. That would be tough to do with a grill but you could at least get the top part hot and then spray it and let it cool down to see how it does. Let it sit for a day or 2 and then check it out.

ive found the spray cans of high heat work much better than the brush on.
