1924 T Coupe
 

My neighbor just bgt. this Coupe and I have a couple of questions. Why is spare tire mounted at such an odd angle, rather then straight up and down? The neighbor calls it a Doctors Coupe. Why would it be called a Doctors Coupe? His car is very nice but has no rear seat, but does have a trunk. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The name, "Doctor's Coupe" really wasn't a Ford designation. The car was used by doctors for house calls. It was the perfect size. The spare tire always hangs at an angle. Don't know why, but it may provide easier access to the trunk.

Raproce, thanks for answering one of my questions. The spare tilts out at the top but doesn’t affect the trunk. It might be easier to get to the trunk if the spare was straight up and down. Just an odd placement.

Simple, the spare tire carrier was the same on all cars. Because the back of the touring sloped back it was made to fit that body so all were made that way. Ford then only had to supply one type of carrier.

Actually there were at least two, sometimes three different spare tire mounting methods depending on model year of the Model T. The coupes and runabouts used a small bracket that in 1926 - 27 mounted to the body. Meanwhile tourings sedans used a bracket that mounted to the rear spring U - bolts. And roadster pickups mounted their spare to the running board, blocking one of the doors.

As for the coupes and runabouts the spare tire has to be that way to clear the trunk lid when it opens.
