Leakless Water Pump
 

Making some changes to improve reliability and performance of my A as a driver. Need to buy a leakless water pump and see there are a few to chose from. Are all made by the same company or does one standout as more reliable for long drives? What are the key things I need to look for. Any recommendations appreciated.

I would recommend the leakless pump with the rear fitting that excepts grease.

Have been using one for over 25 years, never a leak or even a drip.

Mac’s or Snyder’s, others I am sure have them also. Enjoy.

My pump is made with leftovers from leakless pump conversion ---- the leakless pump car pump has been changed 2 more times, still using my used parts leaks less and less pump--over25 years --

Proper restoration to original specifications is more reliable than many of the "improved " modifications

I agree with Kurt. In 1993 I restored my original pump and only bought a new shaft and lead packing rings. I also used the locking collar to control end play. I smeared grease on the rings as I installed them in the rear brass adjustment cap. That pump never leaked for 20 years, and I only adjusted and greased it a few times. I installed the new brass bushing with the double lip seal a few years ago, just to better ensure the grease doesn't enter the antifreeze.


Run the fan belt just snug enough so the fan and generator don't slip.

Check with the major vendors, Snyder, Brattons, Berts, etc. They describe the pumps.
Some have the one with sealed rear bearing (no grease) and greased front bearing. Rupert leaklessapumps.com make 2 good pumps also.

Murphys law states that a leakless pump will in fact leak.

The original model A design is in my book your best bet. Add the collar like Tom suggests Keep the front bearing lubed and dont go bonkers with the rear greasing job and if it starts to weep then tighten the packing nut some.

if a leakless starts to leak your SOL.

If you have a local A shop, could additionally ask their opinion too. See if there are certain types that are less, or more prone to issues.


My experience - I had one put on my A, was getting tired of the mess in the engine bay. Was told at one time that originally they were designed to drip at a very slow rate. At the time had a lot of rust in the cooling system, drips created a mess, plus if you are using anti-freeze, hard on paint and metal surfaces.


Mine was in pretty bad shape, had it rebuilt once, lasted only a year, could have been the rebuilder did not do a good job. At the time I did not know of the updates for the originals. So it was quicker and not that much more expensive to have a leakless put on, do not know type/brand. Have not had any issues for 5 years.
