I need to seal the gas tank on my 29 pickup. What product have You used that worked well?

none. just find a clean tank and swap it.

or find a shop that can open it up, sandblast it and weld back together like Brent Terry has done....

they use it in airplanes.........so think of the failure rate.

Don’t be concerned about using a good sealer. Follow the direction completely. The tank on a 29 is not hard to remove.

We did ours 30 plus years ago and it solved all our problems.

Back than, we purchased the sealer from Mac’s.

Just use a really good quality sealer and follow the instructions to the tee.

As good as any is the POR-15 system. Motorcycle folks have been using it for years. Biggest thing, whichever system you use, is to make sure that it specifically mentions being resistant to high-alcohol fuels as sometimes you may not have the option of using non-alcohol fuel.

And follow the prep directions to the letter.

I have 4 Model As and every one of them has had the tank sealed. I drive several thousand miles a year and have never had an issue with it. I did have trouble once with a tank I hadn't yet gotten around to sealing shed very fine rust "dust" as fine as talc. It plugged up the filter. Now that I have cleaned out the tank and sealed it, I have no second thoughts about setting out on a trip of several hundred miles
If you use a good quality sealer and follow the instructions, you will be better than good.

Not on a Model A but on a boat, I have used the sealers that are used to seal aircraft tanks. I bought the sealant from https://www.aircraftspruce.com/. It can be thinned with MEK. Tank has to be clean.

Warning: This stuff is hazardous to your health. Use PPE.

I second what JayJay said. I did my tank 15 years ago and have had NO problems since. I used the 3 step POR-15 sealer. Again, follow the prep steps to the letter.

Get a good sealer from one of the good vendors. It works, done it in both of my A's and have had no problem.

Many guys are against the sealers. I have used both good and bad.


a good sealer will last most of our lifetimes.

Does the FAA allow ethanol in aviation gasoline?

Ethanol might be the cause of sealer failure.

The last time I heard ethanol is NOT allowed in aviation gasoline.

I wonder if Aviation gas has all of the Guberment (sic) mandated chemical makeup and junk that standard pump gas has..

That might be why there seems to be no problems with tank sealers in airplanes!

30+ years ago I sealed a '27 Packard tank with the Bill Hirsch sealer, tested against the "new" alcohol being put in the gasoline. It was a thinner, whitish sealer compared to the older, non-alcohol type which he sold, it was a thicker, honey colored sealer. As far as I know, the Packard is still going well since I sold it. Have no rust in the Model A tank.
