1936 generator cut out wiring

1 Attachment(s)
I want to be sure that the attached reflects the correct installation of the cut out (repro from Joe’s); there is a screw at the rear which remains “bare”, but there is no existing wire to attach to this.

Forward lug is marked “BAT” and tests as negative (positive ground 6v system).

Am I ok as shown ?

Thank you.

PS - this cut off does not have a diode and warms to the touch when connected as shown

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

If it's mechanical then it should be completely isolated until the engine starts. In other words, it should remain the same temperature as ambient. If the cut out breaker points are stuck in the closed position, the battery will try and motor the generator making things warm up considerably. This is not a good situation.

A large power diode will only let current pass one way so that the battery won't motor the generator but can pass current back to the battery once it starts charging after engine start up.

Thank you; will swap this cut out for a diode version. Score another victory for crappy imports (no offense to Joe, who does a great job).

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

How many wires are coming up out of the back of the generator?
there should be 2, with one attached to one of the screws holding the cut-out on. This is for the ground. It maybe already there on the side of the generator that isn't showing. terry

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

Not the correct cut out or generator wiring for 36. I am not saying the wiring will not function but 36 has two wires out of the generator not the stud. One black wire to ground at the screw holding the cutout to the gen body and a red wire to cutout that has a small hex head bolt for the wire. Looks as if rebuilder used a later armature stud for the cutout connection these studs are reproduced for the generator rebuilding business. The top of the cutout should have Ford script as well as the letter "A" for vehicles produced in the first half of 36. The letter"B" for the rest of the 36 production.

Thanks Terry. I needed that exact info. Lawson.

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

Thank you for this further detail; Tom Whitney is redoing the generator and cut out which came with the car and which I suspect to be correct. The current generator unit is a placeholder until I get mine back from Tom.

Assuming the “red” wire is attached to the armature stud, if I run a separate black grounding wire from one of the cutout attachment screws, where would this be attached internally ? Thank you

Field coil ?

I believe these are the A and B marked cutouts Terry speaks of.

Is there any chance of your posting a photo showing a little more of the cut out marked with the B? I have a cutout with the B but yours appears to have a different connector for the wire at the top of the photo than mine. Yours appears to have a forked or split connector there where mine just has "bolt" to connect the wire.

Yes, it has a forked connector because I mounted it on a 1931 model A generator that uses a terminal stud. They all work the same, just different markings.

But no separate ground / black wire to the side mounting screw ? I’m not sure I understand how the single armature stud arrangement, which presumably uses the red wire, eliminates this.

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

On a model A generator, the field is grounded inside the generator body rather than the outside.

Re: 1936 generator cut out wiring

Ford used similar cut outs for all 3-brush generators since they used them for so long. There are a lot of variations from model T years up through model A and clear up to 1939. The ones for the N series tractors were a little different but mostly how they mounted to the generator. Some were marked for battery and armature terminals and some had no markings at all. They were likely available from Ford dealers well after the war was over. They were set up in a universal way so that they would fit either a model A or a 1939 Ford Standard so they would fit either a terminal type generator or one with protruding wires.

There were two items grounded inside the generators. The field coils had the 3rd brush connection on one end and the ground connection on the other. The brush opposite the armature or power brush was also grounded. The ground wire extended out the case to the cut out mounting base on generators that had protruding wires. Eventually the protruding wires were used for two brush type regulators as Ford started using them.
