Question about shifting points I'm shifting my Model A into 3rd at about 20 MPH. Is this too slow? I do not want to unknowinly be bogging the motor and beat up the mains/engine.
Engine has about 1600 miles on it and is in great mechanical condition. Thanks in Advance! Dino |
Re: Question about shifting points I've heard of lots of people that shift into high at even under 20 mph. Since there is a big gap between 2nd & 3rd gear, I like to go up to more around 22-24 mph before I shift. I also live in S. Calif., with busy surface streets, and cannot dwaddle accelerating from a light or stop sign.

Re: Question about shifting points |
Re: Question about shifting points I know someone who always starts in second gear and shifts to third in the middle of the intersection............talk about lugging the engine.
I find 5 to 10 for second and 20 to 25 for third works well for me. |
Re: Question about shifting points Depends on rear end ratio, engine mods, wheel size , transmission, if all stock then you are in the ball park,

Re: Question about shifting points According to Mr Ford the shift points should be
1-2 at 5 to 8 mph 2-3 at 12-15 mph I think some might consider that 'lugging', but, apparently Mr Ford didn't. I shift to 2nd at about those speeds and into 3rd at around 15-25 mph depending. |
Re: Question about shifting points Thanks for the help folks......So if you are coming up to light that just turned green after you braked the car down to around 15mph or lower, it's best to downshift to 2nd right?
Thanks Again, Dino |
Re: Question about shifting points Yup, double clutch, down to 2nd, then up to 3rd. You will also learn to match spark advance to rpm, and load..
