Hole in Block???
 

I recently removed the side panel from my Town Sedan motor and discovered what looks like a hole in the side of the block from the valves area to the crankshaft fiber gear.

Hole size is about 2" X 1.5" in size. Edges are ragged. Picture is attached.

Is this normal?

Or did something at one point in time jam on the fiber gear side to knock this hole out. There was no evidence of any metal pieces, so I am assuming that any problem has been repaired. There is evidence that the engine was worked on before I got the car back in 2009. Silicone sealant used on the oil pan gasket and only silicone sealant on the side panel (no paper gasket installed)

Should I be concerned?

This has come up in previous threads, they're normal. Can't remember the backstory, I'm sure others will fill in.

I thought so, but the hole looks really crappy and rough edges, like something foreign punched it out.

I have punched those holes out in v8 blocks in the 60s when i worked on the production line at the Ford Foundry in Cleveland. Was for oil flow. Used a pneumatic hammer with a round end chisel

common in the casting process to leave a thin flash (a barrier) then in the clean out
of sand and such it was knocked out rather to be machined cause it won't be seen or be fancy. Or likely for oil mist. These depend on mist for lubrication caused by its splash oil system. just what Ray 64 said....

Its for overflow.. when the oil pump flow overcomes the drain back tubes capacity. it also bathes the timing gear with oil..

Interesting thing is that I never noticed this "hole" in the block for my 1930 Canadian Roadster when the motor was overhauled in 2012 (Canadian engine)

I just did a complete valve replacement and I never noticed it either. I think unless you also have the timing cover off, it's just lost visually in the dark recesses of the valve chamber.

Timing cover is being put back on today.
