Side Mirrors
 

I bought myself a hinge pin side mirror and found that the pin is too small. It measures .233.
My car is a 1930 Briggs Town Sedan, and the current hinge pin for the door measures .250. Obviously, I have a small problem.
My questions are:
1. Should I just shim stock the pin to make it fit?
2. Buy another mirror that provides a .250 pin?
3. Is it okay to use a hinge pin side mirror with wind wings, or just buy the mirrors that clamp onto the wind wings?

I had the same problem with my Tudor.I bought a 1/4 “ stainless bolt of the proper length at tractor supply,chucked the bolt in a electric drill and ground the head down on a bench grinder to resembe the original hinge pin.Drilled the mirror bracket to fit the new bolt(pin).It was very easy to do and looks great. The attached article may be of help. It pertains to the installation of side view mirrors on Victoria door hinges, which is essentially a 1931 slant window car. However, the basic logic does apply.

I opened the hole in the mirror bracket to match the diameter of the door hinge pin, and used a hex head bolt in lieu of the hinge pin. Chrome covers dress-up the bolt head and nut.

Slant window cars have the largest diameter pins, and there is enough remaining material in the mirror's bracket (edge distance) to accommodate these larger pins.

As I remember this pin is oversized at .250 or 16/64ths


You might call to verify this as they might be standard sized at .234 or 15/64ths.


Note my 29 Sport Coupe had .234 ORIGINAL pins when I put mirror on it.

I stopped at Berts:

They have pins:
.232
.234 p/n 48575

.245 p/n 48575-OS

none at .250

and V8 pins at .275

To answer point 3, if you have wind wings, use the clamp on types but check them periodically for tightness to the glass. Have had many cars this way with good results.

And Benson, thanks for checking on the sizes of pins available from Bert's. I measured the pin again and I believe that the .245 pin is correct.
Duke36, if I decide to go with the mirrors for the wind wings, do they have a lot of adjustment so that you can place the wings in different positions?

See the vendors mirrors selections; they just clip on to the glass with rubber gasket and can be positioned vertically. They also can be adjusted around the ball pivot. Down side is that windwing brackets have to be drilled and screwed into the door skin.
