Cleaning the center bearing. So I've got a Nos center bearing for the torque tube and it needs a clean. Normally I just wash bearings in petrol and spin them dry but I don't want to do anything the hurt the rubber casing on this one.. Suggestions on what to use just to make sure?

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. Ultrasonic cleaner would do a good job and you can use pretty mild detergents.

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. This looks promising: https://www.wd40.com/products/indust...gth_degreaser/
and https://www.homedepot.com/p/Simple-G...3440/206624118 GOOGLE the following: Grease remover that won't harm rubber. |
Re: Cleaning the center bearing. I wouldn't suggest spinning or spin drying a bearing after removing all of its lubercation.

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. I had always read and been told to never spin a bearing with compressed air to dry it. But I always did it anyway, being careful not to let it spin to fast. Well, one day I spun one a little to fast and it lethality blowup in my hand! So like most things in my life, I tend to learn the hard way. I was not seriously hurt, but could have been. :(

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. I always appreciate being told "WHY", or the consequences, to do or not do something. It seems to reinforce the instructions

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. Why on a ballbearing is...if you have friction you get heat...then you get expansion and galling that destroys the bearing surfaces and even catasthrophic failure.
You want the very boring version on geometry of the ball in the race and more why´s i can extend it... |

Re: Cleaning the center bearing. That's the problem - imagine you are spinning it with it wedged onto one or two of your fingers. When it seizes... well you can imagine what it would do.

Soooo...…….Is there possibly a "winner" betwixt y'alls? That is, between you's two guys, which of ya has the best (or dumbest) "dumb-ass" story? Remember, we'll keep the results private, just to our own small family here on the 'Barn! DD |

And then I connected my electric train transformer to a large milk jar to collect the oxygen and hydrogen. That explodes as well. I could go on for days, I have almost always been a walking danger zone! Finally started to learn. One of my engineering jobs in later life was safety engineer, I knew most of what could go wrong by that time. |

When I said spinning it dry , I use fuel so it drys drys quick I wouldn't sit there for ten minutes doing it :D:eek: What about something like white spirits to wash, I assume that shouldn't effect the rubber?? |
Re: Cleaning the center bearing. Once.. When I was a kid my mom had a pressure cooker. It had the top you put over the steam vent so when it was boiling the top rattled. I thought it was cool. Decided one day to boil some eggs.. What better way than to use that cool pressure cooker pan.. I didn`t know you were supposed to cool it and let off the pressure before opening.. The results were not good. Lost a bunch of skin from my face and arms. (egg everywhere) Thanks to my quick thinking sister she covered me with vanilla extract and it didn`t blister or scar. Just turned dark brown which promptly came off when I got in a fight a couple days later.. I have done a lot of dumb sh*t but that was up there with the worst.
