Opportunity Knocks, and I just had to have another to play with. Hoping to get lucky. Definitely not opened up in a Long time. It came with a transmission, and fully dressed. I'll check a few things and try to get her running. Wish me luck.

Just remember - it was set aside for a reason.

You'll enjoy the action of finding out that reason - the reason not so much.

Have fun. I have one I recently opened (busted up rear main in an engine with remaining shims on all but the rear) and another waiting in the wings.

Not to mention the one rebuilt one, and two more upstairs of known deficiency.

Very easily! Peeking in the plug holes, the valves sit real deep. No adjustable lifters, and lash is all over the place.#1 exhaust must be .050"

Update of the motor assessment. For those amused by my wrenching. Pulled the valve cover, and found all intake valves to be between .005 and .008. Cylinder 1 exhaust to be .035 plus. #2 exhaust about .025, 3 and 4 , about .020. These results led to pulling the head. Prior engine worker used a copper gasket without any sealer, so head removal went well with no real difficulty. Piston .060 over with negligible ridge. Valve inspection showed valves not to be set deep, but sharp edges on valves far beyond any useability, and seats not bad at all.

Ok, what are your thoughts on the wacky valve lash numbers. No stuck valves.

Saved the next step till later. I have a guess to explain # 1 and #2........what's yours?

On adjustable lifters? Sounds like someone had a hard time with the grinder.

The former owner seems to have ground valves "out of block" and never checked for "valve recession" - a phenomenon in the day more of the block than the valve (and reason for creation of leaded gas then) but a symptom he has successfully imitated by use of a powered bench tool.

A case of "too much capability and not enough knowledge?"

I have always been surprised by the number of "valve grinding systems" which show up on Ebay. I think EVERYONE in the day was grinding valves simply as excuse to spend some quality shop time away from the wife and with their Model A - which I sympathize as Model As are understandable - the female of the specie are an intellectual challenge.

All valves are trash, look like the lash was ground with a hand grinder. Half were burnt, all were ground to sharp edges. The cam shows peculiar wear due to the foot of the lifters have a hole in the center. The aluminum gear is a pretty new, but chewed up by an incredibly rust pitted crank gear that only an idiot would reuse. That entire valve train is trash. The bores look very good, but they are still holding the rotating assembly. Next access the babbit and bearing shape.
My guess on the valve lash was wrong, I was expecting a few flat lobes. So you who guessed someone crazy with a grinder nailed it.

Yeah, I would love (if I had room in the garage) to have a 4 banger to tinker on just to get running. But the reality is that it would nickel and dime me into the dog house.
Rationalization: "I may need it for my car someday" , That is what has constructed those little stacks I call projects in the corners of the shop.

I wondered when that question would be asked. I've been charged with being the custodian of a '40 Fordoor for going on 40 years now. A gem of a runner that has rewarded me with many years of reliable service. A great touring car.

Well, the teardown of the "opportunity" motor is complete. The mains are toast. Barely any oil grooves remaining, and very scored. Rod bearings usable, for a while anyway. looks like I end up with a good block. Haven't measured the crank yet, not expecting any encouragement.
The rods had little 1/4" square pieces of shim, two per rod. Most of that hanging out half way.
My expectations took a real beating this time. I expected something to be good. I guess I should say I also have a set of pistons that fit the bores, but man, are they scored. Must have been a sand storm when this one was put together.
End of story.

Well, sometimes it's better than you might expect. I bought a pig in a poke engine last year and just found the main bearings to be 0.003" with shims still in the engine. Whew!!
