How many use a oil filter shelf with magnet in your transmission?
Pro or con??

Have added them and can imagine no downside.

The oil screen is a great item, and use it. Have one with magnet, others without, but removed that magnet from reported displaced magnet that was chewed into the bushings of the triple gears!


They are useful to catch things, and a must for cotton linings. The non-magnet tray caught some odd things over time. IMO, the tiny oil drippers over the bands need some enlargement for more flow.....so have drilled bigger holes....won't cause any flow problems for the screen to get stuff out of the oil stream that is directed by the angled metal shelf.

When I opened up the trans cover on my 26 Fordor that screen/magnet was full of all kinds of mean, nasty ugly things. Glad the previous owner put one in:rolleyes:

So. Should I use the magnet? How large should the holes be?

Just over size the holes to what you like, I used a step drill and made the center tiny holes larger, in steps.


As for the magnet, your choice, most of the screens come with them. But a verified report of a magnet getting loose means you should think about keeping it in place with wire tie or some physical means.


On a rebuild, I put in a round magnet to catch the 'new' metal that comes off of new parts when you first run a rebuild. I did 'wire' this one because I thought about loose things as this magnet was a round one that I added to a new screen that did not come with a magnet.


This magnet caught a bunch because the an issue, both related to triple gear face tolerance and mistake in the builder of magnet gap to coil ring, and there was rubbing that caused metal to get ground off a couple of magnet clamps. Had to pull the engine to fix that.


So in a case of a new engine a magnet in the screen is a helper.


But am now cautious of any 'loose' thing in that screen tray, even if you think it will stay put because it is a magnet....think again!
