Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting Intense grinding/scraping growl that is tied to wheel RPM. Most recently came on when car was warm, cruising in 3rd. Comes and goes, I cant seem to find consistent trigger. Front wheel bearings replaced, not that. Sounds like it is coming from gearbox area, doesn’t really seems to be coming from front wheels or rear end. Noise is only tied to rotation of wheels, shut engine off to coast and it continued. Shifting seems normal. Far as I could tell, potential culprits in that area that are turning with wheels are driveshaft roller bearing, U joint, and output shaft bearing....any thoughts?

Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting Pinion bearing or something in the rear end. Sound will telegraph.

Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting Make sure it's not your drum rubbing on the backing plate.
The u jpint is very close to the bell that covers it. Maybe something is loose down there with the hsg. See if it changes when swerving left to right. |
Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting A speedometer or speedo cable squeal can telegraph to almost any part of the car.

Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting long shot .... can you tighten wheel/lug nuts a little bit more?

Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting Thanks for all the replies. I am going to take a look at the speedometer gear and u joint area. I think my drum/ backing plates are interference free and wheels are snug. Steering one way or another didn’t affect the frequency or intensity of the noise, so I was leaning towards something that rotated with the rear end.
Early Friday morning I was daydreaming about posting something about my ambitious plans for proactive A projects this new decade leading up the A centennial, but I was asking for help just to keep her runnin’ before the sun set! |
Re: Sharp Scrape/squeal from coasting It only happens in high gear ?
With engine off and coasting, was trans in gear or neutral, clutch in or out ? |
