Happy Birthday to me....
 

My 67th birthday present... We bought this '29 last Sunday, off of ebay, and made the trip down to Greenville, Tx. yesterday (my birthday) and brought it back to NW Arkansas. This is a beautiful 30+ year old restoration. It belonged to the grandfather (not sure if he bought it new) then the father inherited it (he did the restoration) and then the son.

Now, to point of this post...

The engine is in boxes! Now I'm a fair mechanic but I don't have a clue or the equipment to rebuild a Model A engine! I need a person/place, as close as possible to NW Arkansas, with the ability to put the engine back together again. Block is clean but needs to be bored out to .080, rods need to be re-babbitted and then re-assembled. It came with new .080 pistons, rings, gaskets and such. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I can get the motor work done? Thanks...

Happy Birthday.
If you haven't joined a local Model A or antique car club, that would be a good place to start. Someone must know of a good local shop that can bore the block and assemble the short block, or do the complete engine.

hey just a quick line...maybe you dont need the .080 pistons. maybe get by with less cutting of cylinders...for the cost of pistons...let engine rebuilder determine what you need,more wall thicknes the better i always say...good luck birthday boy...have a happy b day...kev

Happy Birthday and I cannot think of a better present then an A.

I would get a manual and "assemble" the engine. Nothing like having the chance to see how it all goes together without the worry of having to have it run.

Another up side to putting it together is the shipping to the builder, nothing to clang together and get damaged.

Find a local club and see who the members have used.

Sleeve it back to the stock bore. The best running/sounding engines I have heard all have been stock. This only an amateur observation on my part, after having stock engines and one that was 80 over and hearing other peoples over the years, but I am sure there are many other things that go into rebuilding an engine that sounds good other than just the bore.

Contrats on both latest b-day and on that great birthday present, love it ;)
Regarding the engine, if you are not into the speed thing, you are better off, IMO, to keep as much 'meat' in the cylinder areas as you can get. So, you have better than the .080 pistons present...and that good,eh ! While at it (getting an expensive rebuild), you may as well consider having builder putting cylinders back to stock ? Probably best, with least future problems, if done correctly. You have a lot of fun/serious decisions to make otherwise also, i.e.- poured or insert bearings, stock or full oil pressure and on/on. While I'm not looking for a race engine, I would like to have it warmed up a bit! Cam, valves, carb & exhaust upgrades come to mind... I'm always open to suggestions.

Ok that's fair, and just about what almost all of us guys want :) !
I suggest that you start shopping and gathering 'warm up stuff' ...now and have it ready for builder to install when he has the short block done to you specs. I suggest that you are close(?) to James(DreamWorks) a member here and that he would make your engine happy and ...warm:D.
He could also put larger intake valves in, maybe inserts, full oil pressure....and on/on. Do not forget to discuss the SIZE of your wallet , when talking about warm stuff. He will probably be able to wear your ears out about how warm that he can go, ending with something like this...'how warm you want , depends on the SIZE of your wallet :eek:

Happy Birthday; that is certainly a nice birthday present.

There is a Model A club in Fort Smith and one in Little Rock; check the chapter listing at mafca.com for contact information. Someone should know of any local builders
