My steering box

My latest project is that my Coupe's steering box is kaput. It's "Death wobbling" all over, even on smooth road surfaces. So I got it out and dissasembled. Many worn parts, many questions! There's no doubt that the sector shaft, bearings, and the worm must be replaced. But what about the large race? It looks good but looks can be deceiving. Any one have any thoughts or suggestions? This is my first one!

Re: My steering box

I re-build mine about two months ago and to replace everything but the shaft and the worm gear on the shaft which were in great shape ran me about $420.00 and was not hard to do at all, my steering now is perfect and it is such a good feeling to have actually accomplished something that really turned out well.

If you are refering to the upper worm gear bearing race, part # A-3553-D the two things to look for is a crack from over tightening or pits in the bearing surface. If it shows no problem (rare) , it should be good to reuse. Usually the upper race on the worm gear itself is where the worse pits will be evident and require replacement of the worm gear. I've heard of some building up-filling the pits on the worm gear race with silver solder but have never tried it. I usually just replace worm gear shaft and all to prevent the headach and risk of trying to press a new worm on the old steering gear shaft. It can get expensive.

If you can chuck up the upper race in a lathe try polishing it. If not, replace it along with the other bearings. Use Service Bulletins to assemble and adjust.
