smith-gordon frame question

i am helping a friend who is building up a model a- smith gordon air compressor. he has a frame that was under a compressor, but someone had cut the front horns off too short and welded in the cross member. i removed the cross member to be used in another frame he has. the reason it was welded in was only the top front and the out side frame(2 on the left and 1 on the right) rivet holes line up. i held the cross member up to an extra frame i have and all the rivet holes line up. can someone explain what is going on here? i know there are several differences between the 28-29 verses the 30-31's, but i have no idea what year any of the frames are.

Re: smith-gordon frame question

The only advice I can give you is to call Steve Becker at Berts as he can tell you what you want to know, As he has a great big junk yard of these cars out in CO and many frames of all years so he would be the one to talk to as I would before you go any farther on the frame.

His number is 1-800-321-1931 ask for Steve as he is the owner of the place and there not open on Mondays it's Tuesday to Saturday that there open, and Tuesdays is there busy day just explain what you are doing and he should be able to help you out.

I can sell you one for $800.00 & you don't have to work on it.

not interested in buying a compressor, i'm just helping a friend who just turned 90 and is still tackling projects. i just hit 75 and i think he feels better than i do. my question was from being curious about the quirks of these beasts.

I'm not interested in buying one either I just thought you needed help with the frame that you are working on that's it, but good luck with it if you don't need any help with it as I just was telling you of a place to call to get the help you needed.

One of out frequent contributors has a relatively complete study of the model A frame evolution. You might want to check that out when questioning actual model A frame members if that is what this is in reference to.
