1939 clutch replacement
 

I I am moving forward with replacing the flywheel and clutch in my 1939 Ford.
I have a replacement kit from Mac’s. Please remind me where the throwout bearing and pilot bearing go?

The Pilot bearing goes in the flywheel opening, the front end of the trans shaft then ride or spins inside the flywheel. The throwout bearing goes on the trans shaft in front of the clutch forks and pushes against the clutch fingers when you push on the pedal.

I bought a new flywheel from speedway motors. I am giving it a try.

How do i install Pilot? How do I remove the old one?

The pilot bearing is pressed into the flywheel. Once you get your new flywheel on the bench and the old one out of the car you can compare to see how far to install the new bushing.

If your reusing your old pilot, take a socket or drift the same size and knock it out of the flywheel. The drift it into the new flywheel and your good to go.

The throwout bearing is just loose on the input shaft. There is a small return spring that needs to be taken off first. According to the throwout bearing you have you may have to separate the bearing from the holder. Might want to get a service manual, very helpful.

You will need to jack up the car, remove the rear end as a unit, then remove the transmission. there are bolts that attach the transmission to the engine block. You will need to pull up the floor mat, put the trans in neutral, remove the floor shift lever, and disconnect the shaft of the throw out bearing that connects on the drivers side, next to the transmission. When you remove the transmission, you will see the throw out bearing riding on the main shaft of the transmission. it is held on by means that you will see when you pull the trans . This is a large job but if you do All your home work, it is doable - good luck!

Take out the front seat. You will need all the room you can get.

it may help to take the u joint off the back of the transmission for added clearance, it helped me.

You had better make sure it all fits then take it off and have it all balanced..
