Bondo on aa yes or no?

I'm going to run my aa at auction. Do you guys thinking I should bondo the fenders so they look smooth or leave them dented up and just paint it. They don't look that bad but there are not smooth

Re: Bondo on aa yes or no?

Leave them the way they are.

Yep leave it as is. I wouldn't even paint them. Often I would prefer to buy sheet metal "as-is" when I can see what is needed vs. defects covered with bondo that may (or may not) need to come off to properly make repairs. Meaning more work for me.

Ditto as Greg said.

It's an 80+ year old truck, so a few dings and dents are expected.

Re: Bondo on aa yes or no?

So you are saying if I bondo and make the fenders look smooth would actually hurt the sale or bring less money then if I just it black the way it is. What about the body? Would bondo the body also hurt the sale?

I think any work done would hurt the sale. I prefer to buy something as original as possible. Just the other day I bought an intake manifold at a garage sale and had to pay extra because the owner was so proud of the green paint. To me it looks like it was painted over rust, so now I need to sandblast the paint and rust to paint it correctly. Paint on bady panels is even worse because I figure it might be covering bondo.

I see your point but, how come when I watch these auctions like Barrett Jackson I see clean and shine model As?

Re: Bondo on aa yes or no?

A lot of them are total frame-up professional restorations, using new metal when needed, but totally disassembled and rebuilt to factory specs, and as close to factory showroom condition as possible.
There may be $20.000 labor in one car...

Are you a profesional body man? If not any potental buyer will look at this as a cover up or extra cost to remove and repair. Has your car had a complete restoration or is it a clean survivor? If it is a survivor then this is the state that a potential buyer would prefer. If your intention is to make it look good for a sale your wasting both your time & money. Most Buyers want to see the vehicle in its original state so they can make a good analysis as to what needs to be done and just what condition the vehicle is in.

There is a lot of difference between those at that auction and your AA.
A lot of time and work go into some of those cars at Barrett Jackson.
But then of course if you think that bondo and paint will fetch you another 150,000, then go for it.:D
But for me I like seeing what is under all that bondo and paint. I say leave it as is. Good luck with it.

The difference between Barrett Jackson Auction and your auction is the market. Those who attend BJ expect to buy the best and put it in their garage and MAYBE drive it a couple of times a year - usually to show off (is there another reason to own an old car?) but certainly because they have OTHER cars they drive too.

They don't want to restore an old car - they want to own it and drive it.

So if your car/truck/whatever isn't 100 percent DONE as you're selling it - you'll never get the extra that you put into the fenders. It's still just a used truck - but a used truck with suspect fenders.

Sell em as you find them if you don't want to go the 100 percent yerself.

Re: Bondo on aa yes or no?

I think the fenders look fine , however, that headlight bar and the sealed beam bulbs may be a turnoff for some. No offense meant, just my opinion.

Re: Bondo on aa yes or no?

Were I to do anything I would paint the wheels black. I think that alone would make it look better. Other than that, I think it looks fine.
