Gear Tooth Pitting 2 Attachment(s)
I am in the process of rebuilding a spare transmission. Everything is in very nice shape except the cluster gear which has pitting on almost every tooth on one of the center gears and some pitting on the others. New ones are expensive, and good originals are too, so before I indulge in anything I want to know if I absolutely need it. Since it is a spare trans, it won't be used right away, but my cars are meant to be driven.

Re: Gear Tooth Pitting Junk,not worth the effort, face of the teeth is gone.Look for a good used complete transmission you can find them cheap. Just pull the shift tower and look at the top edge of the gear teeth,if they are straight and true you are good to go

Besides having a howl in second, the hard facing is gone from the faces of the teeth and the lines that you see across the faces is also the dotted line that the tooth possibly can break off at. When that happens, you could loose everything. Besides loosing the transmission case, it will ruin your day too. Replace the bad gears with better gears. While you are at it, check out your transmission bearings' wear too. No slop or pits allowed in the bearings either.

Re: Gear Tooth Pitting If you consider when put into use, the likely life span will be from 5 minutes to 5 years. It will fail and it's going to make a lot of noise. It's just not worth it. Hold off until you can find a better one.

Re: Gear Tooth Pitting That gear also has a lot of wear from clashing the teeth. The first gear section on my old cluster had about that much wear. Found a good used one from a club member, they are out there. I wouldn't reuse it, if I did I'd be worrying about it the entire time I was in 1st and 2nd.

Re: Gear Tooth Pitting Looks like I am going to hunt one down. Not a problem because this is just a spare and I am in no hurry. I will inspect the other gears tomorrow to see if the teeth are just as badly worn. I was going to replace the bearings anyways along with the shafts.

I may be able to help you out. I have been approached by a local lady to assist liquidating some of her late husband's stuff. I saw a large selection of Model-A gears on a shelf. There may be something there that is useable if you are not wanting to purchase new gears. |
Re: Gear Tooth Pitting That kind of pitting is caused by wear, the teeth have gone thru the hardening. I doubt that it will fail, but will likely be noisy.

Re: Gear Tooth Pitting :)Junk in my opinion. why put it back in? Its wore out. So, i put it back and now have a rebuilt trans? Well i took it apart and put it back together...doesnt that mean its rebuilt?
