Disc brakes on 1967 Mustang problem
 

I want to install front disc brakes on my 1967 Mustang.

The issue is I have 14x6 wheels. I do not believe the calipers will clear these wheels. Am I correct?

Is there any disc brake conversion kit that will clear 14x6 wheels?

I don't want to go to the expense of buying 15 inch wheels and new tires. The tires I have on the car are good. I suppose when the time comes to replace the tires it would make more sense to pursue the 15 inch wheel idea.

Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

Factory cars had 4 piston fixed calipers, and had 14" wheels.

My '68 Mustang had the factory Kelsey-Hayes front discs and I used the factory 14" wheels up front. I'd say that you'd at worst case have to find a set of '68 and up disc brake wheels. I can spot them easily, they came on later Mustangs, Fairlanes and Granadas and more. Some Mopar wheels will also work.

Sometime in the late 60's, Ford went to the bigger front bearings, and the
center hole in the 14" and 15" wheels went from 2 3/8" to 2 3/4".
So make sure you check what size center hole you will need in the wheels.;)

As was mentioned above, the factory 67 Kelsey hayes 4 piston brakes fit fine. The standard and styled steel wheels were 14"

Any ideas on where to buy a conversion kit that has the kelsey hayes 4 piston calipers and rotors? The Mustang vendors only sell kits for 15 in wheels.

Try these guys. They did a rear disc for my bird on the Dana 44. Didn't show on the site, but they could do it. They show a 4 piston front conversion for later cars with the note for "14" wheels". Worth an email, but looks like they're behind right now. Problem the virus?

I doubt anyone makes KH brake kits. I would ask around on a Mustang forum. I did a conversion years back using a '69 Fairlane donor car with single piston calipers. I helped someone with a similar swap on a '65 Mustang and recall we had to change at least 1 set of ball joints.

Scarebird makes a set of brackets, everything else you would have to source.

One of the Tbird parts vendors sells a kit using the 4 piston calipers. They work with the stock 55-57 Tbird spindles which are the same as 54-56 car spindles.

Just for fun I checked Autozone for 1967 Mustang disc brakes they show the four piston calipers but they are up there in price and they also show the rotors. Rock Auto also has them and has the loaded caliper option too.

If I remember right 67' Cougars came with front disk brakes. They had 14" rims too. Salvage yard if you want to go that way.

I found a place in Texas that sells a kit that works on 14 inch wheels. They are either the Kelsey Hayes or Granada calipers and rotors. I'll give them a call soon.

Meanwhile, I am replacing the upper control arms as the drivers side control arm shaft bushings are worn.

Apparently Ford optioned front disc brakes on Mustangs in 1967?

I've had this car for 18 years. I'm mostly a early V8 guy but recently I'm enjoying my Mustang again. Although she is needing some minor maintenance. I'll gladly oblige.

My wife has expressed interest in driving the car. I'm considering disc brakes as a safety upgrade for this reason.

Now you can forget about the 14" wheel issue and cleaning disc brake dust off your wheels.
