steering box and shaft removal
 

If I remove the steering wheel, pitman arm, loosen the clamp, and unbolt the box from the frame, and remove the floor boards, will the whole unit come out the the front of the car. It is a 1930 sport coupe, so I can remove the light switch.horn rod out the back.

I remove the brake and clutch pedals and take out thru the cab.

If you are removing only the horn rod you can loosen the steering box, unclamp at gas tank and tilt/aim the steering column towards the drivers door to slide the horn rod out. If you are removing the whole steering column & box, you can feed it out through the bottom, after removing the horn rod & steering wheel, by snaking the spark & throttle levers out between the brake & clutch pedals by alternately moving the pedals.

The starter may have to come out as well for clearance. Wrap the horn rod as you pull it up and out to prevent grease, etc. from getting on fabric.

Can the steering box and shaft be removed w/out removing the steering column housing?

The pedals and floor boards can stay if you remove the sector gear and housing before sliding the unit out. Same going back.

If you adjust the box on the bench you are going to have to do it again after installing it anyway because of clamping forces when the box is bolted back to frame.

Yes can be done in answer to post 6 though can take 2 people to make it easier. After removing steering wheel,control links, not chrome rods, pedals floor plate, left engine pan and starter, disconnect or loosen clamp at tank (or dash) to prevent stressing bracket and loosen lower housing clamp. Wrap housing to prevent scratches and have someone hold the outer housing while pulling shaft/gear combo out the bottom and inward just enough for sector to clear frame. May have to tap shaft end (with nut on) with rubber mallet. Saves removing floor boards, control rods, etc.. Disconnect battery or cutoff switch and /or tape nearby elec.connections.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. After a lifetime of occasionally having to put all back together to do it right, I will remove horn rod, steering wheel, seat, floor boards, brake/clutch pedals, and starter and take it out through the cab. Lucky because it is a Sports Coupe so with the rear curtain, the horn rod can be removed.

I don't think I ever had a maintenance job where I had too much space...:)

I appreciate the comments about wrapping items to prevent grease marks and scratches. I have sometimes forgotten to do that.
