Flathead Friday. Crusty Flatty Pt8: Bolts, Bores and a Buma!
 

After last weeks tumbleweed premiere I'm dispensing with that nonsense.

Part 8 of the Crusty Flatty series shows me dealing with two broken bolts, inspecting bores and valve seats, and also a quick look at the boring machine and the cuts made in the test block. Come and join me in the garage for some flathead fun.

An interesting video for sure. I found the degraded cast iron to be quite curious.

A couple of remarks; t]1.) The new sound method seems to be working quite well, and 2.) you really need a bigger candle.:D

I had the same broken bolt to remove but only sticking out about a quarter inch. I was able to thread a nut on the stud then welded it. Came right out. Mark

Mart how are you indexing the Buma to the bore?

Mart, enjoying your work. Interesting boring machine, are machine;s like that made today. Seems portable??? well, usually boring machines are large milling machine types, but then I don't know much about boring machines.

Denny: The sound is much better, thanks. The candles may be small but I got lots of 'em.

Marko: Yes, the welded on nut method nearly got used this time. I might do a video on the broken studs, that would probably involve welding.

Bill: The Buma has three projecting "catspaw" probes that are wound out using the knob on the top. I have just been finding a part of the bore that seems reasonable and use that to centre it.

Frank. Yes, this is an old school portable boring machine. In theory it could have been used in vehicle but I wouldn't fancy doing that.

I'm new to all of this. I bought the machine some time ago and those bores in that test block are the first ones I have done.

Not sure when I will be able to do any updates, I've been laid low with Labyrinthitis the last few days. It's like being on a ferry boat on a choppy sea. Not pleasant at all.

Great video once again Mart!....sorry to hear your not feeling well.....I have a very similar block, cylinder condition an all. I haven’t tried pulling the pistons yet. I believe mine is a pre-war replacement block. It had Edelbrock heads and a Sharp dual intake with Strombergs. 8BA timing cover and drilled lifter bores with adjustable lifters. Unfortunately a couple of the cyl. bores are worse than yours. Good luck with the project and hope your feeling better soon...Mark

Thanks Mark. I am feeling a little better, I'm going to dress up warm and go down the garage and try and tidy up. I was working on the daily when I was taken ill. I left it in quite a mess.

Do you have plans for your motor?
