brake lining

I just riveted new linings on my new shoes. The lining overlaps the shoe by about a half an inch. Should I remove this excess lining to make it nearly flush with the ends of the shoe & then taper the ends ? How can I do that... will a Dremel cutting tool work? These are the woven Scandinavian style linings. Ron

Dremel? You're a glutton for punishment. Use a belt or disc sander with 60 or 36 grit. A coarse grinding wheel works, too. Beware of dust.

You would want them even, I had my shoes lined and they were flush with the brake shoe but I also used an angle grinder to bevel the edge slightly (I beveled about the last 1/4 inch of the lining on both ends). I have heard this prevents squeaking. I'm not sure if it was a result of that, but my brakes are quiet. If you grind or sand away the lining I would wear at least a dust mask when you do so as MikeK mentioned.

Hacksaw works nicely. Cut them almost flush then taper.

Re: brake lining

Thanks, The dremel was easy and I don't have belt sander just a buffer/ grinder wheel. I wish that the rivet tool sold by Brattons had a wider opening between the pin guides. The top pin guide tends to push against the center ridge of the shoe and forces the rivet pin to be a bit off center on a couple of rivets. Easy fix with a punch to flatten the rivet later. I have had this tool for years, maybe the new ones are better.

gring a flat on the front of that tool and you will get more clearance for the shoe. I had to do that 25 years ago.....they are still the same. good luck
